Warnings: Angst...
It seemed that 3 consecutive years in the Enterprise grew James tired. No longer was he the quirky playboy, relaxed and chill. He seemed to see himself mature in a faster rate that shocked him and more importantly, his girlfriend. He never engaged in conversation that much anymore, unless it was solely duty related. His role as Captain made him stressed out. He would often wake up during the night, to take a good look at himself, and wonder,
What is your purpose?
What are you doing?
What did you discover?
He would turn and look at his girlfriend, who was sound asleep, she couldn't hear the loud thoughts running through his head. Taking a deep breath in, he soon realized, the relationship could not be sustained with somebody who was becoming distant. A decision he pondered relentlessly, every single night. He would watch you as you slept, your face so calm and at peace. It broke him to make this decision.
It was a normal day on the Enterprise. James had finally gathered the courage, he was going to do it. Just a few days before his birthday, but he had to do it. You didn't deserve someone like him. He watched you, as you swayed your hips unintentionally, making your way over to Lieutenant Uhura, wishing her a good morning.
"Officer (L/N)." He called out to you, and you snapped your head to him, furrowing your brows.
"That's a first, after a long time." You exclaimed when you stood in front of him. His eyes lingered on you for a moment, before he stared straight ahead,
"I need to talk to you, privately." He spoke quickly, walking off the bridge. You tilted your head in confusion, before following him. You both walked past several officers and team members, before entering your shared room. James plopped down onto the bed, staring at you the entire time.
"This isn't going to work out." James whispered to you,
"What's not going to work out?" You asked, raising an eyebrow. Your heartbeat quickened, and your gut kept telling you that he was going to end it.
Boy, your gut was right.
You couldn't breathe for a whole minute, you were about to faint. He held onto you as you sobbed, uncontrollably.
"Why the sudden change?" You asked, brushing your tears away.
"My duty as Captain requires me to...I can't do this, (Y/N)." He stated, "I'm so distant from you, and you deserve better than this." He said, getting up. A surge of anger boiled in you,
"You're... different." You spit out, tears rolling down your cheeks once again. "You're not the Jim Kirk I know. The one who didn't care about troubles, the one who was reckless and care-free. The one who promised to love me until the day we die."
"People change." James said, and you huffed. Exiting the room, you stormed over to the medbay, feeling yourself decay into the grasps of a sadness. There was nothing you could do now, James changed. He changed and there was no going back at this point. He sighed, feeling like a jerk.
"I'm... different." He breathed out, as he lay on his bed.
