It's hard... supposed to be happy... Peaceful. But it's been agonizing. The abuse has gotten worse. Verbal. Physical. Emotional... If I look at him the wrong way, he'll beat me... say something wrong, he'll beat me...don't know what to do. I want to try and go for help...won't let me leave! He set up cameras to make sure I stay... no contact with family...

I'm afraid...pregnant with his baby... gets angry and he kills the both of us? ... almost two months and I haven't shown yet... I'll have to tell him eventually. God, I don't know what happened. We were so good. I just hope this baby can save us...

- Lily, 8.23.17

Caroline closed the journal, and she sat back against her headboard, placing the small book next to her legs. The pieces to her puzzle were slowly starting to fit, but not exactly. From what she read, he was getting very abusive towards Lily, and what made it worse is that she was pregnant. Caroline felt bad for the girl even if she didn't know her; abuse isn't a thing to joke about and she's been experiencing it before Laurent but now it's physical. She just didn't understand why he hated her. Before he did what he did to her, she remembered that he said she reminded him of Lily, and he made it clear he despised her. She just could figure out why.

All she knew was she was growing more and more afraid for her safety.

Then, there was a knock at her door before it opened. Caroline slipped the book under her legs just as he came into view, her heart picking up its pace.

"Caroline," Laurent called groggily, causing an unsettling feeling to rise in her stomach. "Come eat."

Laurent shut the door after that, a sigh of relief slipping past her lips. Caroline grabbed the book after and she stood from the bed, making her way over to her dresser quickly. She opened her bottom drawer, and she placed the book inside, shutting it afterwards. The pain in her abdomen wasn't as bad as before so she was able to walk straight. She then made her way to the door, opening it up nervously. Laurent wasn't standing outside of her room like she expected, and she let out another sigh of relief, stepping out into the open space. She shut her door, and she made her way down the stairs and towards the kitchen. It was dinner now and she hasn't eaten all day, so she was pretty hungry. She avoided going down for lunch earlier because she just didn't have any strength for it. Now, she was craving whatever he made.

When she stepped into the kitchen, Laurent was already eating and he was on his phone, yet completely aware of her presence. His head craned so that he was looking at her for a split second before his eyes diverted to her plate, then back to his phone. Caroline walked towards the table and she pulled out her chair, sitting next to him. Her food, utensils, and drink was already set out for her; all she had to do was eat.

She picked up her fork and she played with her food a little, seeing what each piece was. He made fried chicken with green beans, canned corn, and French fries. The only thing missing was hot sauce, but she didn't have the guts to ask him for it. She began to eat in silence, keeping her eyes locked on her plate in front of her. About ten minutes in, Laurent let out an exasperated sigh, throwing his fork down on his plate.

"Why you eat so slow?" He asked, placing his phone down next to him.

Caroline shrugged lightly and she turned to him, avoiding to meet his eyes. "If I eat too fast, I might throw up."

Laurent rolled his eyes, and he stood up, picking up his  half- empty plate and glass as he did. Like her, he didn't have much of an appetite that day, but something was better than nothing. "Do not do that. Eat fast so you can clean."
