[3rd POV - Narrator]

The program became implemented almost immediately as the Enterprise crew left the planet Roiquoi behind. Once aboard, the young female lieutenant rushed directly to the sickbay to visit her weakened mother. She had questions for her. She wanted to know why she left three years ago. Why did she rule the planet this way? Was it because her relationship with her husband was that sour?

The questions ran through her mind rapidly as if they were being transported from the ship's transporter. They were like millions of little atoms bumbling around, bumping into one another until they jumbled up into a large blob of confusion. Her legs had full control of her heading, leading the way as her mind became consumed by thoughts of who, what, when, where, why and how.

Once she had arrived to the sickbay, she was immediately greeted by the ship's doctor, Leonard McCoy. They had met briefly on the planet where she had to restrict her emotions entirely, letting loose only a small portion of her concerns. Here, on the ship where there was no mission, she was free to be a human again. So she thought.

"How is she, Doctor?" She asked, her voice quivering in a mixture of fear and anger much like before but much more intensely. She stood at the side of the bed, just watching as her mother's readings leveled. The doctor was at her side, calm and collected as any professional should be.

"She will live, Lieutenant. For now, she is just resting for a few days before she can be up and running again." He explained calmly as he held his hands behind his back in a lenient way. He glanced at the girl, noticing just how young she really was.

She could be no more than 23, and yet she was entering Starfleet and was exposed to such trauma already. As a doctor, this could not go unnoticed and he made a decision to examine her unofficially.

"Would you follow me, Lieutenant?" He gestured her to the "lobby" as he liked to call it. He was able to watch over his patients but still have some separation from them. He had the Lieutenant take a seat at his desk, in front of where he normally sat. "How old are you, kid?" He asked in a calm voice.

She seemed thrown off by the question and partially nervous.

"Well, sir, that is a random question..." she murmured quietly. "But if I must answer, I am 22." She replied with innocence. "I bet you are thinking that I am far too young to be experiencing this kind of... adventure." She spoke with her brows raised in somewhat sarcasm.

"Quite frankly, Lieutenant, that was exactly what I was thinking." He reincorporated the thoughts he had. Yes, she was too young. "But I'm guessing you knew Jim in the Academy otherwise he wouldn't have fought nail and tooth for you on this blasted ship." McCoy chuckled.

"Yes. He was famous at the Academy. Along with Commander Spock," she explained. "I only know the captain because of practice runs of mission work. I don't know, he was there to teach us all how to be good leaders or whatnot. Hardly anyone listened to him. The only ones who did were men who wanted to be him or women who wanted him."

"And you?" The doctor asked with a smirk. "Did you listen to him?"

"I didn't have a choice, Doctor." She became flustered at his question. "I was always a good student and followed the rules. I wanted to get into the space travel programs. Of course I paid attention." She defended. "I wasn't interested in anything else but how to get out here." She glanced around the sickbay, almost as if she regretted all those years of studies.

"And here you are, on one out of the twelve starships ever created in the entire fleet." The Doctor praised the young woman. "You must feel some sort of pride and excitement."
