Every muscle within his body had tightened to it's core, blood rushed near his ears, the sound of oxygen pushed through it's veins. He did not know if he was angry, he did not know if he was happy, sad or confused. So much was going through his head that he had to yet digest, one of them being that there was someone that looked just like Kai'Sa. He had hoped and prayed to every possible god and demon in any universe and world for this not to be real, for his brain to be still stuck in the maze, or him being dead. The feeling of betrayal grasped onto his heart, clawed into his skin.
'My little angel.' Syndra exclaimed overwhelmed as she threw herself onto Kai'Sa at the opening of her eyes. Clearly Syndra had her weak spots too, who would have thought of a woman who went by the name "the dark sovereign" to almost strangle an ordinary girl.
Kaisa blinked a couple of times after Syndra had let go of her, staring at new faces and the one she had seen in her dreams. Still held in the arms of Sona, warmed by her wings she finally remembered the years being stuck in Zoe's pocket dimension. It had been years since the last time she had seen her other teammates, whom she considered as her family.
When the flowered pupils looked anxiously in her direction she reached out her arm towards the frightened chameleon, exposing her vulnerability at the moment with every inch of her fingers trembling in her vision. Though Neeko did not know what to believe that laid right before her she took her hand in hers, kneeling down to her eye level. 'You are not void lady, but you are still her.' Neeko whispered, caressing the toned bones that pressed against her thin, pale skin. 'How do you know Neeko.'
Kaisa smiled, chuckling weakly. 'I have seen you in my dreams, I'm still connected to the real me.' Her mumbles came out, resembling twigs that broke with just a single blow of the wind. 'I'm still me though.' Neeko finally understood, the guardian that was held onto still left her hand dangling into the palms of the chameleon, who pressed her cold hand against her cheek.
'Your light is very weak.' The words came out like a tremble. Neeko was at the verge of tears, but quickly composed herself to soften the pain.
Kaisa felt tears burning behind her eyes and confirmed her suspicion. 'I have fought for a very long time to keep my team alive.' Janna rested her hand on her forehead, caressing her head like she would when they was younger and the troubles of the world clouded her mind.
'Where is he?' A hint of drought sounded in her voice, her violet eyes looking as far as her body allowed her to, trying to find the man she had been seeing dreams of, to meet who had made the real her happy.
Neeko gulped, not sure what she had to say because whatever Ezreal was feeling right now she was afraid he would yell at her and she promised to keep everyone's shoma safe, even those that was only partially real. 'He does not think you are real, he thinks it's Zoe.'
Saddened deeply the new assembled guardian looked away from her sisters, glancing at her hand that was still held against Neeko's cheek. 'I think I can handle one more battle.' Her voice trembled, afraid to meet the one guy that had been taking care of the real one, the man who had made the last two weeks more bearable, who had prevented her death just in time.
Neeko bit on her lip when a tear rolled down and stained her cheek, with her fingers intertwined with each other she snook onto her toes towards Ezreal, who had his hands combing anxiously through his hair. This entire time he was talking to Lux, who for once had a different look in her eyes when she was around him. The chameleon did not even ask or question if he wanted to see her, because deep inside she knew that he wanted to see her again. Ezreal did not say a word when she pulled his arm from his head, their eyes that met and not left eachother ever since. Neeko walked backwards, gesturing at the weakened guardian. He did not want to go, he did not wanted to see her in a weakened state. Flashes of the maze crossed his mind at every step and inch closer towards her body, he feared that the moment he would get to her she would fade before his eyes. A deep breath collected within his lungs as he pushed it aside, a cold hand that held him by the wrist to guide him further. Xayah, who kept herself silent during the shock of Kai'Sa's appearance, knew what he was going through, she had never shared how she and Rakan became guardians themselves.
When there was sight over her body, except for her face he saw that most of her bruises and infection of dark matter had been cleansed in the presence of her team. If only he could clear the worry that clouded his mind, could set his fears aside and walk towards her as if she was really here, she probably did not even know him. His heart leapt into his throat, drawing drops of sweat onto his temples. The atmosphere had became a lot more warm with the angelic wings of the mute guardian who had brought light and serenity with her, a music that played a rythm of the soul and cleansed the negative out of what used to be positive. With the encouraging tones of the snares playing in the back of his head his shoulders fell, a pressure that had been lifted from his chest when his eyes met hers. A million thoughts had crossed his mind of what he would do if he would see her again, embrace her like he had held her on the docks, perhaps show her more of the world than just Piltover, let her taste the fruits of ancient Ionian gardens, but the only reaction his body had granted him to do was to fall on his knees before her. It was really her, the innocent, now violet eyes that only darkened at the sight of the void, that spoke of a thousand encounters and met with more bloodshed than any other would have and yet, it never made her bitter or cold towards the world, she was one of the few that realised that even when faith into her was seldom and people ran at the sight of her appearance, every drop of blood she drew, only meant that a child would live another day, saw the next morning or night.
'You must be the infamous Ezreal,' The tones of her voice was as weak as before, with just a hint of happiness at their meeting. 'I've seen a lot about you.'
The explorer chuckled, his lips that hesitantly shook whether they were expected to smile, laugh or sink. 'You're not her, are you?'
Kaisa smirked, reached her hand out to him, her porcelain like fingers that brushed away his hair. 'Yes and no,' Her hand trailed down to his cheek, embracing the warmth of his skin. 'I'm what Kaisa could have been if the void had never evaded their land.'
Ezreal frowned deeply, he raised his hand to close it around hers. 'How is that possible?'
Kaisa glanced at the others who was just as eager to find out how two people of alternative universes could exist in the same timeline. The guardian sighed and sat up straight, answering the question that Ezreal had if she still was wielding her jets. She wore nothing but belts, each one engraved with symbols and decorated with knives of all sizes, the only shape that made each of them consistent was the star.
'I was fated to become one of the guardians when I was a child, there are just a few people born with a warriors heart: void or no void, my heart always went out for the well-being of others, so I would fight so that no one else would have to,' Her tale spoke a story that showed itself in pictures in their mind, imagining a young, serene child that grew up in a desert. 'When I was old enough, my father would take me to travel with him, we travelled abroad, far and each adventure called for new experiences. One more common one being ambushed by assassins, merchants that was not satisfied with what they had to sell and killed to earn a penny more from others. Just like my father did we realise a plan that unfolded itself for us. We fought everyone that crossed out path, became swifter and stronger. Sooner or later, people from noble bloodlines and even common folk hired us to ensure save travels.'
As if Syndra and Janna already knew the story they looked as if Kaisa was a daughter of them, overjoyed and filled with pride. 'Kaisa soon found Sona, who originally wanted to bring peace and harmony to all living beings, including the galaxy. Unlike us, Sona could see the warrior within Kaisa and birthed her a guardian, just like Ahri did to you.' Ezreal blinked a couple of times, not knowing what to think of the entire story that brought many question marks with it. If Kai'Sa was summoned from an alternative universe, how come there was not more guardians like her. Ezreal was from the same timeline, he could go back to his life by just travelling back to Runeterra, but this version Kai'sa was bound to her destiny, forever.
'I am the only one of my kind.' Kaisa mumbled softly, pulling her hand away from his cheek.
Ezreal could not help but to allow the chuckle that he had been suppressing for minutes now. 'Just like the original you.' Lost in a stare, the two absorbed each other's energy, exchanging feelings that neither of them could fully understand, nor express. 'If you were originally supposed to be a guardian, what will happen if the actual you becomes one?'
A question that no one had considered about, since none had really taken care into the past of Kaisa, as it would only draw onto saddening times where the one that roamed now, was not the original form. 'This Kai'sa has never been tainted by the void, she only wields it like a power. Just like she wields the void, does she have the ability to become like the others, when that day comes, my timeline ends and will take it's original destiny, with some changes brought to it.'
'So you will fade?' Janna asked nervously, pushing Ezreal aside to sit in her eye view.
'I guess you have to raise me again when that happens.' Kaisa chuckled, flinching out of pain when she made a sudden movement. Breathing out sharply she turned her back towards the others to shelter underneath the wings of Sona, who had quickly covered her when the sound of stone being destructed into pieces.
Every guardian got up, alarmed when the wall between them and the tunnels ahead of them cracked like a stone kicked to a piece of glass. Xayah summoned her daggers and covered Sona's flank, her wing out to protect the weak.
Poppy took the front and swung her hammer out, waiting for the great wall before them to burst. It took one more kick for the person to tear down the wall, boulders ans bricks flying from every direction. Xayah managed to break some of the rocks when they threatened the hit the backline, Syndra who had closed her power around every bit to change the route of their direction, Janna that contained the rest with her wind barrier. When dust and sand were no longer scattering the hall, three shadows stepped into the light, revealing some of the guardians that did not make it through the maze and miraculously escaped the pocket dimension too.
Ahri coughed while waving the dust particles away, seemingly annoyed of the whole commotion. 'Trying to make me wear black, I don't thinks so!'
Everyone's guard fell down when the fox walked in with the others, brushing her hair back when she had realised that she were in front of an audience. 'I assume you guys have not saved the guardians yet, well don't worry because-'
Poppy put her hammer down, with the intention to tell her that they had successfully saved the team, but were interrupted by her fellow Yordle who had pounced herself onto her. Lulu happily rubbed her cheek against Poppy's, speaking of how vile the routes were.
'How did you guys escape?' Lux asked when she met up with Jinx again, assembling her team.
The loose canon flicked her bangs out of her eyes and rested her hand on her hip. 'Ahri had her own saying when she walked around in the halls she were asked to trade her outfit for black, oversized jumpers so she tore down every wall until she came out with us.'
Ahri raised her chin, dusting off her heels. 'And you guys thought training my legs was such a waste of time. Some were able to laugh about that joke, though others rolled their eyes and looked for a way to escape the tower.
'We already saved the others, you idiot,' Xayah exclaimed annoyed, her mood was only shortly ruined before Rakan had stepped into the light, waving the dust particles away.
'You did?' Plucking rocks out of her tales she pranced towards Janna and Syndra, who were bent over Sona for her to even see. 'I highly doubt that you guys would have been able when-' A loud shriek echoed through the chambers when Ahri were shocked mid sentence. Her finger pricked into her direction, lost in a mumble of words no one could understand. 'You're Sona.'
The mute guardian laughed nervously, raising one of her hands to wave friendly towards the fox. No one understood why the nervous tension between the two ladies. 'I absolutely love your music, I've seen every single one of your orchestras, until, you know-' Collecting herself the guardian tried to recover from her sudden outburst. She noticed that Sona were too nervous now to raise her wings when it could only cause her to be more shocked and make more noise.
Lux stepped in to close her hands around Ahri's arm. 'You need to calm down, Ahri. The other guardian we saved is still very weak.'
'Other guardian?' Ahri squinted her eyes when they searched for the second one, only then to realise the bulk underneath the feathers of Sona. 'The light that almost dimmed out.' The guardians now stood aligned, ready to hold onto their captain in case she would once again lose her cool. A sudden shiver ran over Ezreal's spine, the atmosphere that had cooled down when the lights of the sun had shifted and brought more darkness upon the tower.
'Guys, I think it's time for us to leave. The planets are covering the light and sooner or later we'll freeze to death.' Damps of their body heat hovered into the air, Neeko who had mistaken them for bubbles when her fingers too started to slowly burn from the cold.
A sigh of relief sounded through the chamber when they realised they could postpone the introduction between fake Kai'Sa and Ahri.'This has to wait, everyone, barriers up. I'll kick another hole and we'll get out of here in no time.'
