"How is she?" I asked the man that appeared to be a physician as I walked into my mother's room.
"Not well, but at least for now she is stable," the old man said as he straightened her covers. My mother was sound asleep, her chest barely rising and falling as she laboriously breathed in and out. At second glance, this man didn't seem quite as old as I thought. He looked to be about the same age as my mother. My thumb brushed against the anklet clutched in my fist.
"I have something that might help," I said, holding my hand out to show him the orb which was still glowing a light gold despite it's blood red core. "May I?"
The doctor's eyes grew wide and he nodded slowly, seemingly shocked by what I was holding. Seriously, what was so important about this orb?
"Where did you get that?" he asked curiously, his voice thick with awe. I walked to my mother's side, shrugging in response to the doctor's question, and I pressed the warm stone against her lips. It flashed brightly once before ceasing to glow. I refastened it around my ankle as my mother's breathing slowly steadied and seemed easier. I gave the man a wide, toothy smile.
"Its a long story," I said. How does one describe finding a seemingly very important relic outside one's window with out sounding crazy and insane?
The doctor nodded respectfully and began to give my mother a thorough examination, poking her here and there and watching for reactions.
"Well, it seems as if she is much improved! I'm not sure how long it shall last, but at least for now she is comfortable," the man said as he turned to me. He dusted off his hands and held one out to me saying, "I'm Dr. Swiss. I already know who you are, of course."
I nodded and shook his soft, lightly sweaty hand, smiling politely and secretly wiping my hand on the folds of my dress afterwards. My mother shifted in her bed, capturing our attentions, but she just rolled to one side and kept sleeping. I couldn't help but smile at her.
"Please send someone to alert me if anything changes," I instructed the good doctor. He nodded and I left the room, muttering a quick thank you. I had to go back and see Westley.
My feet quickly took me back to Westley's chambers and I let myself in. I figured since I was his wife, there really was no reason for me to knock. Besides, I was half convinced he could sense when I grew near to him.
"Hey," I greeted him as I entered his bedroom, stepping over a green doublet that had been thrown haphazardly on the ground. Westley was sitting on his bed, shirtless. The covers were pulled up to his waist and he was flipping absentmindedly through the golden book. He stopped upon hearing my voice, looking up with a smile and closing the book with a snap.
"Come sit with me," he said pleasantly, patting the spot next to him on his large bed. I crawled onto the bed from the side and leaned against the padded head rest, letting my head fall onto his shoulder. "How is your mother?"
"Doctor Swiss says she should be fine for now," I replied, snuggling against his side. I hadn't realized how much I had missed him while I was kidnapped, even though I'd been unconcous for the majority of the time. He must have been in my dreams or something. Maybe coming close to death, but conquering it, makes every bond, every relationship you have that much more special. "I missed you."
