Chapter 14

The group had separate from their meeting that night to get some rest. Janae, with no place to stay for the time being, went home with Pink. Who was beyond excited to have a new roommate...

Unable to sleep, Tris was up all night, trying to figure out a way to effectively get information on Jake's plan. She knew they couldn't do it alone...

She knew they had to protect Payton.

But infiltrating the dinner meeting would be risky ESPECIALLY if EDG would be there as well...

Carefully, Tris constructed a plan...

She would go to Jake, claiming to switch sides, giving him her weapon as proof. Then, she would take the information he gave her, and report back to her team.

If all else failed, she would have an extra gun hidden on her person.

Arming herself with a sword and a gun, Danica set out to find Jake..

It wasn't too difficult to track him down. In fact, as Tris was passing through the woods nearing his hut, he found her first.

Grabbing her by the throat and slamming her against a tree, he scowled.

"What are you doing here?!" He demanded.

Playing along, Tris didn't fight back. Instead, she choked out:

"I want... to join... your side."

Shocked, Jake reluctantly let go of her.

"And why is that?" He asked cautiously.

"My team... they're all liars and fools. They betrayed me... and I want revenge," she said, with as much hatred in her voice as she could stir up.

Jake studied her before asking for proof. In response, Tris tossed him her pistol.

"If I'm lying," she said, "you can shoot me and I'll be gone."

He smirked at her.

"Very well then..." he said. "However, just one precaution to ensure your loyalty to me."

With that, he stretched out his arm towards Tris.

His powers.... Tris froze, how did she forget?

She held her head in pain and cried out, a wave of confusion overcoming her.

There was no way to stop it.

No escape.

Then the fog cleared.

Tris stood up straight and faced Jake.

Completely brainwashed.

"Very good," he said. "Now, go find your friend Payton. Get her to come to the lake. And while you're at it, take care of your co-leader as well."

He grimaced.

"Andrew... always in the way. Can't have that, can we?" Tris nodded in agreement. "Now go," Jake said.

With that, Tris went off to find Andy and Payton.

And to give them over to Jake.

Tris found the two in headquarters, in the middle of an argument with several others.

"Ahem," she said. The chatter died down, and a few of them greeted her.

"Hey Tris," Andy said. "We were just trying to figure out where you were...It helps if you answer your phone, you know." She remained silent.

"Andrew, Payton, there is an emergency at the lake," she said a moment later. "Meet me there. Everyone else, stay here.. this shouldn't take long."
