The sun was victorious when it came to the battle of the sky. Only light shone over the rooftops of Derry, Maine. The boys sat quietly, admiring the colours of the sheet above them. Reds, oranges, yellows, some pinks and even a bit of purple here and there. The light reflected off of Eddie's cheeks, giving them a slight tint of gold. Richie felt his face heat up, not because of the burning bright ball in the sky, but because of how perfect Eddie looked at that moment.
"Rich," Eddie began. School was a tough thing to talk about, especially if you considered the constant intense bullying Richie went through when there. Henry Bowers was the cause of him leaving. He called Richie many things; Fag, gay boy, puff. It hurt both of them, but Richie found it all too much. His parents were never really around, they never encouraged him to try and do anything. They didn't force him to carry on. The online school was completely his own choice. He wanted to keep up and still be smart even if he was not attending an actual class in person.
"Will you ever come back to school?" Eddie enquired. Richie's face turned to one of panic. "I-i don't know Eddie, it never really helped being there too." He wasn't lying. Being there really just broke his mental health down into a few small crumbs. He was completing all of the work there in half a lesson anyway with full marks on it all. "I know... it just gets lonely without the others." Eddie sighed.
"I know," Richie started. "You come to my house after school whenever you want, I probably will have finished the work online anyways, and I'm not that annoying to distract you from homework." Eddie looked at him puzzled. "They stopped giving out homework... some parents complained that their kids were too exhausted." Richie was stunned but also relieved. "So you'll come around?" He was hopeful.
Eddie stared at a piece of glass that had been smashed on another rock. His face reflected off of it and looked straight back at him. He turned to face Richie, "Of course I will, hey, do you still have that ukulele?" Richie knew which one he meant. His grandma had sent it him years back, it was black with white moons on the sides. "Yeah, I haven't played it in a while..." Eddie looked up at him. "You should, you were excellent at it."
Richie used to play songs such as; here comes the sun, yesterday, I want to hold your hand. Lots of song by the Beatles. But he would never sing, the words always meant something to him. He did want to hold Eddie's hand, Eddie was his sun, he played yesterday the first day after summer, when everybody had split up. He didn't want Eddie to find out how much he loved him, not then... but he would play the melodies, for hours on end. They sent the other boy to sleep sometimes and Richie would have to lift him into bed.
When the two boys had said goodbye, Richie sped up the stairs and grabbed his ukulele. The paint coat was still in mint condition, no chips at all. He began strumming, "Oh yeah, I'll tell you something... I think you'll understand, When I'll say that something, I wanna hold you hand..." his versions were slower and more acoustic than the originals, but he did enjoy it. His voice echoed the room as he continued. "I wanna hold your hand... I wanna hold your hand." He placed the pick in his mouth and held it there. He had missed doing that for so long, he would share those moments with Eddie again. He was sure of that.
