The awakening Richie had expected never came. The two sat in the living room staring down at Sonia Kaspbrak's passed out body. "You say this happens often?" Richie asked. Eddie's mother had been drinking heavily the night before, apparently it had happened more than once.
"A few weeks ago... she came in the house and started screaming at me. It was nonsense that way spewing out of her mouth but it scared me..." The shorter boy began to shake pulling up the side of his shirt slightly to reveal a black and blue bruise. "I-it wasn't her fault. She didn't k-know." Eddie stammered whilst still trying to keep it together.
Richie on the other hand lost it. He quickly grabbed Eddie's hand, still remembering to be careful, and began walking back to the bedroom. "Come on Eds, we can't talk down here. She might wake up." Eddie listener and carried himself up the stairs and into his room.
"Are there anymore?" Richie asked gently. Eddie stayed quiet before nodding. Both of the boys' eyes began to water. "I'm sorry!" The smaller one cried out. Richie threw his arms around him and held the boy close. "Shh... i-it's okay Eddie, I'm here..." Eddie looked at him, his eyes so sad and broken. "I didn't want you to leave me with her..."
The two stayed in each other's embrace for ages. Just cuddling with Richie comforted Eddie so much, he felt okay. They both did. "I'll never leave you again Eddie." Richie belt out his pinky finger. "You swear Richie?" He reaches out to lock his finger too. "I swear Eddie." Everything felt fine again. They'd get through anything together. They felt loved again, both of them... That's all that mattered.
"You can stay off Eds, tell them you were sick." The taller boy whispered. "N-no I can't." He sniffled. "I don't want you to go into school like this, I'll take you anywhere or we could stay here if you like." His voice was so soothing. "C-can you surprise me? If I get ready?" He asked anxiously. "Yeah, sure." He smiled, happy his friend had cheered up.
Eddie entered the room wearing a yellow jumper and blue denim jeans. "Okay, lets go!" He cheered. Richie places his hands over Eddie's eyes and led him through the door, "it's a surprise remember?" He didn't want it spoiling. He led Eddie down the road and past the houses, one in particular that they had always tried not to pass, but there was no other way to get to the surprise.
