THE 66TH HUNGER GAMES WERE APPROACHING, and all of District Four was preparing for the reaping. Avalon Cox's name was in the reaping 11 times this year; there was a high chance of her being reaped.

What she hadn't expected was for her little sister, Quinn, to be reaped instead. In a panic, Avalon volunteered in her place, which meant she was going to be sent to the Capitol to fight to the death.

Nothing had prepared her for this moment. Sure, District Four used to train children to fight in the Games, but when the tactic stopped working, the government gave up on even trying. Avalon had no fighting skills whatsoever; there was no chance of her winning.

Finnick Odair, however, saw something in the girl; a spark, that immediately alerted him she was going to win. He helped the girl train, calmed her anxiety, and although she felt as if nothing could have prepared her for the arena, Finnick did. And she could never return the favor.
