"So, when are you gonna ask her out?" Gabe asked, smirking at me.
"What? Oh, uh, probably never. I mean, she went through heartbreak already, I don't think she's ready for a new relationship."
"But Cole, you're different than Dalton. You wouldn't hurt her," he insisted. "And if you're going to ask her, it should be soon. We leave tomorrow."
"Yeah! I know!" I snapped. "Sorry, it's just...I've been contemplating it, too. I mean, I want to, but I don't want to get rejected."
"I say go for it," Gabe suggested. Just then, Gabby walked out of her room. "It's now or never, man. Go talk to her."
"Alright," I whispered, strolling over to her. "Hey, uh, Gabby? Could I talk to you?"
"Sure; what's up?" she replied. I struggled to find the right words to say.
"Well, um, h-how are you feeling about Dalton?"
"Eh. That's just life, right?"
I laughed, slightly, still searching for what to say. I leaned against the railing of the balcony while she looked out at the ocean. "So, uh, Gabby?"
"Yeah?" She looked up at me with those big, bright, beautiful green eyes.
"Um, would you, uh, would you like to, uh, maybe, go out with me?"
"Cole...I-I would love to," she said, grinning.
"Oh my gosh. Really? Wow, I.... this is... thanks, Gabby," I said, smiling from ear to ear. I squeezed her in a hug, which she more than willingly returned.
"Thank you, Cole. I really like you," she said, smiling.
"Well, I love you and have since the moment I got to know you, but 'really like' is good, too. Baby steps, baby steps," I replied, causing her to laugh.
"I just can't believe that the summer's almost over," she sighed. "It feels like I just got here."
"I know, right," I said. "But hey. We'll make today and tomorrow count. Let's, uh... let's, uh.... have a.... bonfire! That sounds like fun, eh?"
"Sure, why not?" Gabby smiled up at me. "Let's go tell the others."
"Yeah, sounds good," I began. "I'll go tell Dana and David, and you go tell Will and Gabe, alright?"
"Aye, aye, Captain," she said, before walking away to go talk to her cousin and best friend.
