Chapter 1: If I Wanted to Kill Myself I Would Climb Your Ego and Jump to Your IQ
Imrei POV
Playing the piano has always been like an escape to me, allowing me to get lost in the melody as my fingers glide over the keys. I spend at least three hours every morning practicing and working on music. Another three hours in the afternoon is devoted to the violin, with three hours after dark training in combat under my Master's orders. Besides being a musician for Wistal Castle, I am a messenger for the second prince of Clarines. Being his messenger is rather enjoyable, though he worried for my safety after an incident last year and assigned a partner to me and is having me train to fight. I understand his concerns, but the man he assigned, Obi, is the bane of my existence. He's cocky and sharp tongued and I can't stand him. I don't even see the need for a partner. It does not take two people to deliver a message but I can't deny an order from Master Zen so I reluctantly put up with the cat-eyed nuisance.
I finish playing through the piece I've been working on and the sound of slow clapping draws me back to the reality of the empty ballroom instead of the daydream I'd lost myself in. My gaze moves across the room to find Obi leaning in the doorway with a smirk on his face. Kill me now please. I sigh softly and turn my attention to the carefully drawn music notes on the pages in front of me and pick up the pen to add another note. Obi's footsteps are almost inaudible but I can still hear the slight thuds against the marble floor as he heads toward me.
"Please go away Obi, I am working." I hum as the pen scratches against the paper.
"You're no fun." He pouts as he props himself up against the side of the grand piano.
"I don't bother you while you work. Does Master Zen have a job for us?"
"No."
"Then why do you insist on bothering me?"
"You know Darling, you might eventually find yourself a husband if you let your hair down and try to be nicer."
I shoot a glare at Obi as I run through my next section of newly written music.
"I am nice, just not to you."
"Ow, you're breaking my heart Darling." He pouts as he dramatically rests the back of his hand against his forehead.
The pout quickly changes to his cheeky grin and I toss the book on the bench beside me at him. He dodges it and it hits the floor with a loud slap.
"Rude."
"You're rude by interrupting." I shoot back.
I find myself pinned beneath Obi a short while later as I blindly swing at him and he dodges my hits. This is how my days with Obi usually turn out. He bothers me until I get annoyed and it in turn annoys him and in the end we attack each other until someone separates us. I smirk as I manage to hit his chin and it jars him enough for me to flip us over but before I can hit him again, I'm lifted off of him and placed over a shoulder.
"Hello Mitsuhide." I sigh in defeat.
"Hello Imrei. I thought you were going to try not attacking Obi anymore?"
"Well, I tried. I can't help it that his astounding powers of absolute stupidity haven't resulted in spontaneous combustion. Until then, I'm stuck dealing with him and he may occasionally get attacked for his gross incompetence at life. It's more of an occupational hazard than anything." I explain and he sighs before having me count to ten so he will release me.
Once I'm safely on my feet again, I push the curtain of my long black hair out of my face and look up at him. Mitsuhide is the closest person I have to a friend here and he's made it his mission to interfere with my attempts to rid myself of Obi's presence permanently. As annoying as it is, I guess it does prevent me from getting into serious trouble with Master Zen. I cast Obi a withering glare before returning to the piano bench. Mitsuhide follows and asks if the song I'm working on is the same one I have been for the past two weeks. I sigh and nod as I stare at the sheet music again.
"I can't get past this one section... I've rewritten it twelve times now." I whine as I rest my head on his shoulder.
"When did you get here?" He asks before telling Obi not to sit on my piano.
"Before sunrise." I mumble.
"When was the last time you took a break?"
"About five minutes ago when I-"
"Attacking Obi doesn't count." He cuts in.
"Oh," I mumble as I reach for my hair ribbon to tie my hair back. "Then I guess before sunrise before I got here. I only have another hour until I'm done for the day though. It's only been six hours."
"Have you eaten today?"
My eyes widen slightly and I look to the floor as his gaze burns into my head and Obi snickers.
"Can I lie and say yes?"
"No. No you can't."
Mitsuhide gets to his feet and I immediately grab onto the edge of the piano bench in an effort to not get picked up and carried away. Sadly I am no match against Mitsuhide's strength or his knowledge of my ribs being ticklish and in an instant I'm picked up and placed over his shoulder despite my protests. I struggle but quickly resign to my fate and prop my elbows against his back so I can rest my chin on my hands. I scowl as Obi follows and he grins at me.
"You know if you'd just do what he tells you to do he wouldn't have to kidnap you all the time." He chides.
"Oh bite me Obi. Don't you have to go be stupid somewhere?"
"Quite possibly but this is more entertaining."
"I really hate you." I huff as I glare up at his amused smirk.
"The feeling is mutual Darling. You're just so much fun to mess with."
"Mitsuhide, can I-"
"No, Imrei, you can't." He sighs as he helps me stand in the kitchens.
