Imrei POV

I sigh and run my hand down my face before stopping at a window facing the thick forest growing just beyond the rear castle wall. I tense as I feel a hand on my shoulder and I sigh as I realize it must be Obi or Mitsuhide testing my patience.

"I swear if you do not leave me alone like I asked you to, I will- oh..." I trail off as I turn to look up into a pair of very familiar eyes. "I'm so sorry Prince Izana, I thought you were someone else."

Prince Izana offers me a small smile and apologizes for startling me as he comes to stand beside me to look out the window.

"The view is rather lovely, isn't it Miss Imrei?"

I nod. "I've always thought the forests were simply stunning. That's why I agreed to be Master Zen's messenger, so I could travel often."

"I heard of your recent injuries and of your marriage to the dark haired boy. I hope you're alright and I believe congratulations are in order."

I sigh and shake my head. "Thank you for your concern, but I am alright. The congratulations really isn't necessary though..."

"Oh, are you already unhappy in your marriage?"

I can feel him looking at me so I lift my gaze from the floor but can't get myself to look at him so I move my focus to the scenery instead.

"The marriage wasn't exactly... planned. Obi and I don't particularly get along and its embarrassing but from what we were told, we were both so drunk one night that we got married. Once Master Zen returns, the marriage is being annulled. Not exactly a picture perfect marriage."

"I'm sorry to hear that. I feel my brother shouldn't have allowed that to take place considering how intoxicated you both were."

"Probably, but it's the hand I've been dealt and I'm working with it. I figure he must have had a good reason to approve the marriage since he did assign Obi as my partner after the incident..."

"I'd like to speak with you about something if you don't mind. Would you join me for lunch while we talk it over?"

I leave Prince Izana's office an hour later, his words swirling through my mind. I wasn't sure what to expect when he asked to speak with me, but I definitely didn't expect that... At least I have time to think it over. I work it over in my mind as I head back to the ballroom for my songbook but I seem to only be succeeding in making it more confusing for me. Obi and Mitsuhide are nowhere to be found when I walk into the ballroom so I take the book and head back to my shared room to drop it off. I'll track down Garak afterward and try to set up a drinking date with her tonight. I have too much going on in my mind to stay sober right now. Master Zen needs to return very soon so I can ask him about it. I pass by one of the windows overlooking the training field for the knights and sigh as I find Obi and Mitsuhide fighting each other. At least they're not smothering me up here. If Obi tears his stitches though, it won't be good. I debate on leaving them to rip each other apart but in the end head out onto the castle grounds to interrupt.

"What is wrong with you two!?" I snap as I jump between them, dodging Obi's fist and catching Mitsuhide's. "Seriously, what is going on?"

"It's noth-"

"Don't give me that mess, Hide. It's definitely something and I'm not leaving until you two tell me what the hell is going on."

"Well, Imme, I was just telling Obi that-"

"I should step back on guarding you because with my injuries I won't be able to protect you to the best of my abilities." Obi cuts in, his voice full of tension. "I didn't agree but after our sparring match just now, I feel he is right, so I won't be hovering over you anymore until I'm healed."

"Y-Yeah... What he said. Sorry Imme, we both have just wanted to be the one to protect you and got competitive over it."

"I don't know if I fully believe you but it's the most sense the two of you have made in days and I'm too stressed to fight it further. If I find you two at each other's throats again though, it won't end well. Now, I'm going to find Garak and hopefully get wasted tonight."

"There's a kickback tonight." Mitsuhide tells me and I stop on my path to the medical buildings.

"Well, that works I guess." I shrug. "I'm going to take a nap then."

"Can I come along with you?" Obi asks and I think a moment before nodding. It's his room after all.

I settle on the bed, careful of my stitches and wrist, then feel Obi getting comfortable behind me on the bed. Out of habit, he pulls me closer to him. I get comfortable and rest my head on his chest while avoiding his injuries.

"Imrei, can I ask you something?"

"I suppose. What is it?"

"Will you tell me about the incident that led me to being assigned to you?"

I tense before sighing. I never told anyone except Master Zen about the incident. He and Prince Izana are the only ones who really know about it. Everyone else just knew I was found unconscious in the forest between Clarines and Tanbarun covered in blood. I'd died a few times in the medical buildings but Garak was able to save me. I spent two months in there and it took four months for me to be able to start training, I even had to relearn to walk.

"Well, there's something that no one but Master Zen and Prince Izana know about me... but because of that, I'm a bigger target than normal. Someone in the castle found out about it and it was communicated to a group of rogues since the worker was secretly a member. They ambushed me on my way back from Tanbarun one day and I fought back. I didn't really know how to fight and was horribly outnumbered so I was badly injured. When I finally collapsed from blood loss, I figured I was done for but when I woke up I was in the medical building. I'm not sure why they didn't take me. After that, Master Zen wanted me to step down from my position but I refused, so he assigned me to you and had you start to train me."
