Chapter 13: I Didn't Mean to Push All Your Buttons I Was Just Looking For Mute
Obi POV
I stand beside Imrei as Prince Raji drones on and on about whatever it is we're supposed to be listening to. I'd started to tune him out as soon as we got here. Imrei always listened better, though most of what she later explains is just useless ramblings. I woke up before her with my arms still wrapped around her. Though she hates me it still felt absolutely amazing to me. But I've ruined everything, she'll never truly be mine. I blink back to reality as I notice Prince Raji's eyes are trained on Imrei. I track his gaze and a frown works its way across my face. His eyes are too low to be on her face. I step closer to her and snake my arm around her waist, then fix him with a subtle glare. He glances up at me and visibly flinches before clearing his throat and looking away.
"My wife is absolutely stunning, isn't she, Prince Raji?" I ask, making sure my tone is dark enough to reveal the unspoken threat.
"Oh, uh, y-yes, she is. You're a very lucky man."
I grin and pull her closer to me despite the tension in her body.
"Is there anything else you require of us?"
"No no. You are free to go. Thank you for your time."
"Let's go Sweetheart."
As soon as we leave his office I release her as she turns and looks up at me. I open my mouth to apologize for touching her but she grins and tells me I did great. I arch a brow and she tells me that he does that every time they've come across each other and no amount of glaring seemed to do much. I smirk and ruffle her hair before walking down the hall.
"Glad to be of service to my wife."
"You called me stunning. Really sold that you loved me."
"Y-Yeah. I'm good at pretending." I sigh as I hear her steps catching up to me. "So how are you feeling?"
"I'm much better now, I don't feel sick anymore. We should be able to make it home quickly."
"That's good. You'll only be stuck married to me for a few more days. I'm sure you're excited."
"I just want to get far, far away from Prince Raji and I'm hopeful that Miron is long gone."
I smile softly as I watch Imrei trying to stealthily sneak up on a rabbit ahead of us on the trail. We've been traveling for two days now in a hesitant peace. We're not at each other's throats but I can feel the slight tension between us like we can snap at any time. I'm enjoying it regardless. It's nice to see her happy and having fun, especially after being sick and Miron hurting her. I'm sure she'll be even happier once she's free of me. I look back from a movement beside me that turned out to be just a bird to find Imrei and the rabbit gone.
"Imrei?" I pause and wait for a response but hear nothing.
I curse under my breath and start to look for her. I make it to where I last saw her and notice a few drops of blood on the ground. How did I not hear or see anything? I looked away for two seconds. A feminine scream echoes through the trees ahead of me and I tear through the brush to get to her. I shouldn't have left her side. If something happens... No. I won't let anything happen to her.
I break through the trees into a small clearing and my eyes immediately fall on Imrei on the ground and the man standing over her with a sword raised to stab her. There's blood all over the clearing and both of them. She can't be dead... She can't be. I draw a dagger and move between them, catching his blade with mine as he brings it down toward her. My eyes narrow into a glare as I meet Miron's surprised expression.
"What the hell are you doing here?" He asks.
"I should be asking you the same."
"That little slut got me banished from the castle! I had an easy job and all the women I could ever want until she came along and turned me in."
"She didn't turn you in. I did." I lie as I bring my foot up and kick him backward. "I warned you last time not to touch or look at her again. You didn't listen to me."
I follow after his body as he slides across the clearing and his back hits a tree.
"Why the hell do you care Obi? Do you have a thing for that bitch or something?" He chokes out.
I don't answer him and instead knock the sword from his grip and lift him off the ground by his throat. He meets my eyes in defiance before he chuckles.
"I was right. You like her. Poor sucker, she hates you and besides if she didn't want me she would never go for someone like you."
"Shut up." I growl as I tighten my grip then slam his head into the tree.
He's still conscious but just barely. I can hear Imrei's breathing getting worse so I sigh and slam his head against the tree one more time and let his limp body hit the ground. He's alive and will survive if someone or something else doesn't get to him before he wakes up. He's getting off easier than I'd like but I don't have time to waste. Imrei is hurt.
I make my way over to her and look her over for injuries. There are a few minor cuts and some growing bruises but nothing major until I notice the stab wound to her stomach. I take off my shirt and tear it into a long strip, then tie it snugly around her in an attempt to slow the bleeding. I lift her into my arms and cast another look at Miron before hurrying off toward the castle.
