Chapter 4: It's Not the Size of the Fangs It's How You Bite
Obi POV
I manage to escape the bakers a short while later with a few stolen cookies tucked into my jacket. As I make my way across the grounds, I find Mitsuhide with Imrei sitting on the edge of the fountain. Her head is on his shoulder again and I can hear her laughter fill the air. I sigh and turn away from the gardens to look for Shirayuki or Garak instead. They'll distract me for sure.
I find Garak in the medical building eating her lunch so I settle in a chair across from her desk and take the cookies from my jacket. She looks up at me briefly before pulling a bottle from a drawer in her desk. It's placed in front of me along with two glasses.
"Pour it up and speak."
"What am I supposed to speak about?" I ask, my question muffled by the cookie hanging out of my mouth while I pour the whiskey.
"You have that look again and a bruise on your face. I'm guessing you came across Imrei again?"
"She's my partner and lives on the grounds, I'm going to see her." I respond evenly.
"Why don't you just tell her how you feel?" Garak sighs.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Obi, you admitted it to me before so don't even try. If you can say it to me you should be able to say it to her."
I lean the chair back on two legs and stare up at the ceiling. "You forget that Imrei hates me with a burning passion Garak. I can't just tell her that. She'd laugh in my face."
"Well my only question is if you feel that way toward her why do you annoy her so she hates you more instead of trying to be nicer and get her to not hate you?"
"There's no point. She'll never not hate me for whatever it is I did so if her yelling at me and fighting with me is the only way to be around her, so be it."
"You know she's going to be at the kickback tonight, right? Maybe you should tell her or at least show her you care."
I wake up to the sound of voices below me. After talking to Garak and helping Miss Shirayuki a little more, I came to one of my favorite trees to nap until the kickback. I apparently overslept as it's dark outside now. I recognize the male voice as Miron, the sous chef for the castle. He's a disgusting, vile man even by my standards. I've known pirates, thieves, mass murderers, serial killers, and the lot but Miron ranks in the upper levels of the worst of the worst. I wonder which poor unsuspecting staff member he's trying to hook up with now. I sigh quietly and stretch on my tree limb as I try to pick up on the soft feminine voice.
"You know Darling, I get the feeling you don't like me." He says jokingly. She probably doesn't.
"Well it's not like you've done anything beyond the relentless flirting but I am aware of how you treat the other women here and I don't find it appealing."
That's Imrei. She hates Miron almost as much as she hates me. Why is she with him? I roll over and peer down through the foliage and find her leaning against the tree.
"I don't do anything to those girls that they don't want me to." He reaches out and tucks her hair behind her ear and I scowl.
"That's not what I hear."
"Oh come on Darling, I'm really not that bad."
I smirk as Imrei pushes away from the tree and heads back toward the staff quarters but he reaches out and grabs her wrist. I sit up, ready to come to her rescue but her voice stops me.
"Okay Miron, you're going to have to get your hand off me." She sighs and I can see her glaring up at him in the moonlight.
"Relax Darling, let loose and have a little fun."
She jerks her arm from his grip but in the time it takes me to blink, his mouth is on hers and she's fighting against him. I rush down the branches toward them and notice him pull away suddenly and bring his fist toward her. I hit the ground in between them and catch his fist then break his nose with a punch of my own.
"It's rude to put your hands on a woman without her permission, even if it is Imrei." I hold back a smirk as I feel the glare aimed at my back.
"I'm pretty sure this is none of your business Obi." Miron sneers as he wipes under his nose. "She wants it."
"Imrei, do you want this ball of scum touching you?" I ask as I look back at her tearstained face.
"N-No." She whispers as she slightly shakes her head.
"That's what I thought. You have a choice Miron. You can stay and fight or you can tuck tail and never touch or even look her way again. Your choice." I bite out, making sure the threat is very obvious.
"Eh, she's just a slut anyway." He grumbles and starts to walk away.
I go to turn back to Imrei to check on her but she steps out from behind me.
"Miron, wait."
I arch a brow and watch as he turns around with a grin but she punches him in the mouth.
"Now you can go." As she walks back toward me, I keep a glare trained on him, daring him to challenge me. "I guess I owe you a thank you, Obi."
"You really need to learn to fight. You're lucky I happened to wake up from my nap in the tree just then."
"You know you're just calling yourself incompetent since you're the one training me, right?" She points out and I sigh.
"I am a master at my skill, which is why I was able to save you just now. A teacher can only teach if the student is competent enough to learn."
"I hate you." She sniffles as she wipes her eyes with one hand and avoids my gaze. "But thank you Obi..."
She's never thanked me before... it's weird. I feel like I should hug her but I don't want her to attack me for it so instead I gently pat her head, earning a halfhearted glare in response. Close enough.
