Chapter 3: It's Been Lovely, But You're Draining My Will to Live
Imrei POV
Mitsuhide leads me out onto the grounds, thankfully leaving Obi behind as he'd started to flirt with some of the kitchen staff. It gets him out of my way so I can try to enjoy my life as long as Master Zen doesn't have a job for us. Mitsuhide and I settle on the edge of the fountain and he hands me a plate of food. I thank him and rest my head on his shoulder with a sigh. I pick at the food until he scolds me for not eating, so I grab a carrot stick and make a point of showing him that I bit it.
"So, you've never told me what's going on between you and Obi."
"There's nothing going on between us." I scowl.
"I know that. I just meant what makes you two constantly picking at each other and at each other's throats."
"He's insufferable, that's what it is. We have never gotten along and he just gets under my skin. I can't stand him."
Mitsuhide chuckles and I roll my eyes. "I think maybe he picks at you because he likes you."
It's my turn to laugh but it fades out when he doesn't laugh too.
"You're kidding, right?"
"It's just a thought. Oh by the way, we're getting together to drink tonight, are you in?"
I find myself sitting on Mitsuhide's leg as Garak refills my glass. There's a group of us castle employees who meet up behind the servant's quarters every so often after night falls and we drink and unwind. I accept my glass thankfully and take another swig. Tonight it's Mitsuhide, Garak, Kiki, Yatsufusa, two of the guards I play poker with, a few maids, the sous chef, and three other kitchen staff members. We've moved the chairs and a few tables from our rooms to set up on the cobblestone area behind our quarters. It's nice and pleasant. Obi is usually lurking around somewhere flirting with the maids but I haven't seen him yet tonight.
"Obi not coming?" I ask Mitsuhide.
"He said he was but I haven't seen him. Why? Are you missing him?" He smirks and I scowl.
"Of course not. Good riddance."
"Hello again Imrei Darling."
"Miron." I mumble, my grip subtly tightening on my glass.
Miron is the sous chef and second in my running list of unpleasant people. He's nice enough but is a well-known womanizer among the help. I lift my gaze to his bright blue eyes and he winks at me.
"Can I help you?" I ask as I turn back to Garak for a refill.
"Will you walk with me? I want to talk to you."
"You're not going to try to hit on me are you? I told you I'm not interested."
"Oh, I would never Darling."
I sigh and drain my glass before getting to my feet. "I'll be back Hide."
"Be careful." Mitsuhide halfheartedly calls out and I follow Miron around the buildings and onto the main grounds.
Our walk so far is just polite conversation. It's not so bad I guess. I figured he really would have tried to hit on me or something. Miron stops walking so I lean back against the tree trunk behind me and cross my arms over my chest.
"You know Darling, I get the feeling you don't like me."
"Well it's not like you've done anything beyond the relentless flirting but I am aware of how you treat the other women here and I don't find it appealing."
"I don't do anything to those girls that they don't want me to." He smirks as he tucks a strand of my hair behind my ear.
"That's not what I hear."
"Oh come on Darling, I'm really not that bad."
I roll my eyes and step away from the tree to head back but he catches my wrist as I pass.
"Okay Miron, you're going to have to get your hand off me." I sigh as I glare up at him.
"Relax Darling, let loose and have a little fun."
I jerk my arm from his grip and mentally curse as he steps toward me. I'm only able to take two steps backward before my back hits the tree trunk and his arms trap me.
"Mir-" I'm cut off by his lips crashing onto mine.
I try to shove him away but his hand instantly catches both of my wrists and they're pressed painfully against the bark. His tongue darts out to run across my lips as his free hand roughly grabs my chest through my shirt. I bite hard onto his tongue as I feel tears start to trail down my cheeks. He pulls back and I see his fist heading toward my face. Before I can react, another hand reaches out and catches his fist before a hard punch cracks his nose. I look up at the newcomer in shock and find a head of dark hair in front of me shielding me from Miron.
"It's rude to put your hands on a woman without her permission, even if it is Imrei."
"I'm pretty sure this is none of your business Obi." Miron bites back. "She wants it."
"Imrei, do you want this ball of scum touching you?" Obi asks, glancing over his shoulder at me.
"N-No."
"That's what I thought. You have a choice Miron. You can stay and fight or you can tuck tail and never touch or even look her way again. Your choice." Obi bites out, his tone dark and threatening.
"Eh, she's just a slut anyway." Miron starts to walk away but I call after him.
"Miron, wait."
"I knew you'd come around Dar-" I punch him in the mouth and grin.
"Now you can go." After he leaves I look up at Obi and sigh. "I guess I owe you a thank you, Obi."
"You really need to learn to fight. You're lucky I happened to wake up from my nap up in the tree just then."
