Chapter 7: Keep It Up And You Will Be A Strange Smell In The Attic

Imrei POV

I wake up just before dawn to a loud rumble of thunder. Well, that's just great. I slowly sit up straight and open my eyes to look for Obi but I don't see him. I sigh and lean back against the tree again to wait for him. He's likely scouting the area or checking the storm's path. My eyes widen and I jolt as the tree trunk feels softer than it did last night. It's not exactly squishy but there's some give. I turn and shuffle backward as I realize what happened. I fell asleep leaning back against Obi somehow. A curse leaves my lips as I lose my balance and fall off the limb. A hand reaches out and I'm lifted back up only to meet Obi's amused gaze.

"Shut up." I grumble as I settle on the limb in front of him again. "There's a storm coming in. We should get moving."

A strong wind whips through the trees and I pull my hair ribbon from my wrist. I should have pulled my hair back when we left but I was too distracted. I gather it all into a pony tail and tie the ribbon off. Another rumble fills the air followed by the gentle ticking of the rain drops hitting the leaves around us.

"Let's go."

I'm cold, I'm wet, I'm annoyed, I'm ready to strangle Obi... This is a great day already. The storm is at full power above us leaving us to travel from the ground. The wind is strong enough that branches are breaking at random and falling from the canopy. We've both had to dodge several limbs each and at one point I was nice and pulled Obi out of the path of a rather large falling limb. If I would have left him though, I wouldn't have had to worry about Master Zen having to annul the marriage but I'd rather not have blood on my hands. Obi stops suddenly and grabs my hand to pull me close. I stare down at our hands before looking up at him in confusion.

"We're not alone. Stay close."

"How many?"

"Two."

"We've got this."

I draw my dagger and lift it to catch the knife trained toward me. The only times Obi and I even remotely get along are

when we're fighting off attackers or in the presence of clients. I duck as Obi's arm swings over my head, hitting the man in the nose. I tackle him to the ground and drive my fist into his temple knocking him out.

"Good job, for a rookie." Obi says as I get to my feet.

"Gee, thanks. You're the most supportive husband ever." I scowl, elbowing him in the ribs as I pass.

Obi pulls me off the path a few hours later. The storm is still raging on with no signs of stopping any time soon. I ask where we're going but he doesn't answer me. I get my answer as we reach a small cottage almost completely hidden by brush and trees. He pulls a key from his pocket and the door is forced open a minute later.

"What is this place?" I ask as I sigh in relief at the break from the rain.

"A safe house. We'll stay here until the storm breaks."

He crosses the room to the fireplace and looks it over before lighting a fire.

"Oh, well... Thank you." I mumble as I put my bag down on the counter.

I move to settle in front of the fire as he goes into the other room. I pull off my sweater and hang it off a nearby chair to dry. I have spare clothes but my bag is soaked through so I have nothing. I look up as Obi comes back wearing dry clothes and sits beside me.

"Where did you get that?" I ask.

"Get what?"

"Dry clothes."

"I kept a change of clothes here." He shrugs.

"Any extra?" I ask hopefully but he smirks and shakes his head. "No. Sorry."

"No you're not. Give me your shirt."

"No. Why would I do that?"

"Because I'm soaking wet and freezing. You can live without a shirt while my clothes dry."

Obi gets to his feet and sprawls out across the couch. "I'd rather not."

"God you're so rude!"

I reach over and grab a throw pillow from the nearby chair and toss it at his head.

I find myself pinned beneath Obi a few minutes later as insults fly from my mouth. I'm not sure what exactly led to this, but after I called him rude he called me stupid and now we're here. I try to free my wrists from under his hands but he's a lot stronger than I ever will be.

"Just let me wear your stupid shirt you idiot!" I growl.

"Why do you hate me so much?" He asks instead, his golden eyes burning into mine.

I chuckle harshly. "You really don't know? That's rich..." I take his momentary distraction to free myself and get to my feet. "Keep your shirt, I'd rather freeze."

I go into the back room and slam the door shut, separating me from Obi. With a sigh, I take off my shoes and socks along with my over shirt, then sadly crawl into the bed and cover myself with the blankets. I'll still be cold and I'll end up sleeping in a damp bed but I'm away from Obi. I glance at the door as I hear him knock but I roll my eyes and burrow deeper into the temporary comfort without answering him. He'll go away eventually I'm sure. I sigh as I hear him call my name. If Obi doesn't know why I hate him then that's on him. He should know.
