Chapter 6: Lazy Is A Strong Word I Like To Call It Selective Participation
Obi POV
The door to my room slams open after hearing a knock and I sigh into the pillow since I'm face down. After a moment of silence I wonder if whoever it is has taken pity on me and is letting me sleep, but I feel a small hand latch onto my ankle and I'm swiftly pulled from the bed. Well, seems like someone wants to die. I get to my feet but as my eyes fall on a very angry Imrei I pause and ask what she's doing.
"Obi, do you remember last night?"
"I saved you from the chef creep, you're welcome by the way, and we went back to hang out. Why?" I ask as I yawn and scratch the back of my head.
"Obi, look at your hand." She mumbles and I realize that her eyes are trained on my left hand.
I arch a brow but comply and my eyes widen slightly at the small silver band on my finger.
"Oh, I got jewelry apparently. Not really my thing though." I shrug.
"God you're an idiot." She sighs as she holds up her hand. "According to Mitsuhide, we got married last night."
My heart sinks but I shrug it off. "Well, congratulations to you and Mitsuhide. Honestly, I can't say I'm surprised."
I blink a few times and realize that's not what she meant.
"You're stupider than I thought. Mitsuhide said that you and I got married. Like Obi and Imrei. Why the hell did you do this to me!?"
I laugh despite myself. I didn't do this. It feels like a cruel prank but Garak is the only one who knows...
"Me? Do you really think I want to marry someone like you, Darling? You're not exactly my type of person."
I can't let her know that I like her, it'll only make things worse.
"Don't flatter yourself." She shoots back. "There's no way I would marry you so you must have done this." She pokes my chest with her finger and the slight blush on her cheeks at the contact doesn't escape me. "Now put some clothes on you pervert. We're going to see Master Zen so he can get us out of this mess."
"How am I the pervert when you came into my room Darling?"
She flinches slightly and tells me not to call her that as she walks out.
As soon as I'm dressed, I open the door and Imrei latches onto my wrist and forcibly drags me through the staff quarters and up toward the castle. The whole time she's mumbling a rant under her breath about the nightmare that her life has become. I don't take her words to heart and simply smile because she looks so cute when she's mad.
I hold back my amusement as Imrei's jaw drops. Master has just told us that we did actually get married but he can't help us out of it right now because he's sending us to Tanbarun. She hates me enough as it is, but now I get to go to Tanbarun with her while she's mad, hungover, and unwillingly married to me. This will be fun.
"Why can't you annul the marriage before we leave Master?" I ask, wanting to try to free her from being stuck with me.
"I'm sorry, I'm just too busy today. If you're unhappy with your union and haven't consummated, then just carry on like normal until you return."
Imrei sighs and I notice a slight blush when Master mentions consummating.
"Just treat it as your honeymoon, Imme." Mitsuhide grins and I chuckle as she tries to attack him.
He catches her wrists easily and dangles her in the air.
"Sleep with one eye open, Hide." She hisses. "When I get back, I will get revenge for that comment."
"If you insist."
I find myself walking beside Imrei as she continues to complain about the marriage and the injustice of it all. I know it wasn't what either of us had planned but I don't know why she's upset. She's never dated anyone to my knowledge and doesn't seem to talk to anyone besides Mitsuhide at length. She doesn't- oh. She probably likes Mitsuhide and now I'm in the way once again. It isn't like I did this or agreed to it or tried to keep her from getting it annulled. Whatever she wants, I'm not going to stand in her way.
I stop and turn back to Imrei as she stops short and a weird look crosses her face. I ask what she's doing and she arches a brow.
"You just stopped walking and got this weird look on your face."
"That is called disgust at the thought of me being married to you."
I sigh and shake my head. "The feeling is mutual, but the faster we get to Tanbarun the faster we can get back to the castle and we can be free of each other. Got it Darling?"
She flinches again like she'd done in my room earlier and reminds me not to call her that. She never cared before. She turns back to me as I stare after her and tells me to hurry.
Imrei and I settle in a tree for the night after spending the day digging at each other. She gives me an apple and I quietly thank her as I stare up at the moon. I ask why she snuck off with Miron last night and she tells me he wanted to talk to her and she didn't plan to be assaulted. I figured that much.
"It was still pretty stupid of you." I feel her glare at me.
"How do you figure?"
"You can barely fight yet you go off alone with a man in the middle of the night. Especially with a man like him."
"I can fight well enough." She huffs. "You don't have much room to talk either Obi. Your reputation is only nicer because your little flings are consensual."
"Is that really what you think of me Darling?" I mumble. Of course the rumors circulated but I gave up trying to dispell them.
"Stop calling me that."
"Why? Is that a problem, Darling?" I presses and she takes a shaky breath.
"Because that's what Miron called me when he was attacking me! Every time I hear it I can feel him touching me and I'm not okay." Her voice cracks and I feel like an idiot. I should have known. "I know I was stupid for going with him but I thought I would be safe and that I'd be able to fight back but I froze. He was just suddenly on me... I thought I would be okay if I drank until I forgot, but it didn't work. Why am I not okay?"
"I-I'm sorry Imrei." I whisper as I move over to her branch and pull her into a hug and she flinches but her slender hands grip my shirt a second later as she cries.
