Chapter 17: To Protect The World From Devastation...
Obi POV
I leave the table after gathering her winnings and cast another glare at Garak before heading to our now shared room. I knock before entering, having earned no response. I'm sure she doesn't want to talk to me. Even in the darkness, I can tell the room is empty. I sigh and place her stuff on the nearby table before heading off in search of Imrei. If I know her as well as I think I do, even with her injured wrist she will likely be in the ballroom with her instruments. It's where she went after the incident before I became her partner and where she seems to hang out on bad days. On the rainy days when the staff lingered around the castle as much as possible, the doors would be opened and she would spend the day playing and you could hear the music trickling through the corridors. I haven't asked her or Shirayuki, but I worry about her wrist affecting her playing even after its healed.
I rush through the halls as loud crashing sounds come from the direction of the ballroom. My feet slide on the floor as I stop in front of the doors.
"Imrei, I- oh..."
My jaw tenses as I find Imrei on the floor sobbing, her violin shattered into pieces around her with the scent of blood heavy in the air. I'd go to her, but as always it seems Mitsuhide is right there ready to save her. He looks up at me and asks what's going on. I guess she hadn't mentioned anything to him.
"She left the kickback and I was looking for her. I'm not sure what's going on here though."
"Why did she leave the kickback?"
"She said she was going to bed but she wasn't in my room when I got there."
"Why would she be in your room?" Mitsuhide's tone darkens and my body tenses automatically.
"Well, she's my wife so it makes sense we're living together." I bite out, my fingers itching to grab a dagger. "It seems like you're always here to save the day though, so I'll leave you to it."
I leave the room and start to head back to my quarters but find myself heading out across the grounds to the border wall instead. Master will be out for two weeks, so as long as I return by then it should be fine. Imrei has her precious Hide to take care of her so what reason do I have to be around? I scale a nearby tree and land nimbly on the top of the wall. I drop down to the ground on the other side and walk into the forest. I'll just clear my head for a little while and then I'll come back before anyone realizes I'm gone.
I make it a few feet into the forest before I duck down to avoid a fist sailing through the air toward me and throw my body into my attacker's. We both hit the ground hard and I try to pin them beneath me as they struggle and try to catch their breath. I catch their fist and twist it painfully until their wrist snaps, then use my other hand to wrap around their throat. The clouds move away from the moon revealing Miron glaring up at me.
"What do you want?" I growl as I squeeze tighter. "It's bad enough you got your filthy hands on Imrei twice, now you're stalking me through the forest?"
"I wasn't finished with her yet." he chokes out and my grip on his throat gets tighter.
"You won't lay another finger on Imrei. I'll kill you if I have to to make sure of it."
"You're just upset that I got further with her than you ever will." Miron chuckles between gasps of breath.
I release his throat and draw a dagger, pressing the cool metal to his throat.
"I'm upset because you put your disgusting hands on my wife and almost killed her!"
"Your wife? Oh that's rich. You're so delusional Obi. Now why don't you be a good little boy and get off of me so I can destroy the woman that ruined my life?"
I dodge the punches Miron throws but my movements lead to me having to abandon pinning him with the dagger. I put some distance between us as I get to my feet and track him as he tries to disappear into the trees. He's just a simple chef. He's no match for me, especially in my environment. I hear a short, high pitched whistle followed by the sound of at least five people coming toward me through the trees. I smirk and reach for another dagger, twirling both in my fingers before turning on heel to stab the first man that lunges at me.
My eyes wander the clearing in search of Miron. I'd taken down his men with a relative ease, only earning a few minor injuries. I remember fighting against him but I don't see him now. He probably turned tail and ran when he realized that even with his hired backup he'd still lose against me. I sigh as I head back up over the wall. I've had my fun for the night I guess. I'll check on Imrei if she isn't asleep already, then I'll try to get some rest. I enter our room and find her sitting up against the wall reading a book by the light of a lamp. She glances up briefly before returning to her book, then quickly focuses on me again.
"Obi, you're bleeding."
"It's just a scratch." I mumble with an attempt at a shrug but a spiking pain jolts through my body.
"There's literally a knife sticking out of your chest!" She puts the book down and crosses the room toward me but looks hesitant. "What can I do to help?"
"I'm fine Imrei. Are you okay? I wanted to talk to you earlier but I-" I trail off as the room sways around me. "But I-"
"Obi?" I feel her take my hand and I curse as my legs give out. "Obi! Shit... Someone help!"
