the boys are seventeen in this by the way
i sat silently in my room, biting my nails. i heard a quiet knock on my door.
"come in," i called out tiredly.
my mom stepped in. "hey squirt. you alright? eddie left pretty quick."
"i have to tell you something..." i told her quietly.
"i'm listening." she sat down on my floor beside me, squeezing my knee.
i sobbed, and she wrapped her arms around me.
"i'm gay momma..."
"oh, squirt. that's what you were worried about telling me? you know i'd accept you. no matter what."
i sniffled and laughed. "eddie and i are kinda a thing."
"aww really?" she squeaked. "that's so cute."
my smile fell, and i looked up at her; her smile faded too.
"ms. kaspbrack found out eddie was gay... that's why he had to leave. i-i'm really worried about him."
she bit her lip. "should we go pick him up?"
"i don't know... his mom is crazy."
we sat in silence for a moment. "i'm not trying to pry, but have you had sex yet? like do we need to have the talk?"
blood rushed to my face. "mom," i groaned. "i'm not having sex until eddie is ready. but no i do not need that talk."
she opened her mouth, probably trying to push that subject farther, but was cut off by a quiet knock from the door downstairs. we looked at each other, making sure we both heard what we did, and scrambled to our feet and down the stairs.
my mom threw open the door, showing a bruised and bloody eddie.
i ran to him, tackling him in an embrace.
"eddie baby," i sobbed, holding him to my chest tightly.
he clung to me, shaking. "s-she tried to send me away," he whimpered.
"what?" i cried.
"she said i was sick, and that i needed to go to the doctor to g-get better," he explained quietly.
"don't fucking listen to her eds."
my mother, who had been silent throughout this whole ordeal, finally spoke.
"you can stay here as long as you need honey," she told eddie.
he sniffled. "thank you mrs. tozier."
eddie looked up at me, and i barely suppressed a gasp. his whole jawline was bruised, dark fingerprints lining both side.
i caressed his face gently, without thinking, and he flinched back, wincing a little.
i mentally slapped myself. "sorry eds," i whispered.
he opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off by the telephone ringing inside. my mom went to answer it; eddie and i followed her in.
"- no i haven't seen eddie, mrs. kaspbrack..."
mom looked up at us with wide eyes.
"of course i'll help you look for him! oh, you'll be here in five minutes? o-ok, see you then!"
she quickly put the phone back in the cradle, and spun to her purse grabbing her wallet.
"i'm kinda short on money right now boys," she said, producing a hundred dollar bill. "this is all i have."
she handed it to eddie. "ma'am i can't take this-"
she turned to me, not listening to eddie. "get to the bus station as quickly as possible. then take the greyhound to manhattan, your aunt will be at the corner of third avenue and east ninety seventh street. you remember how the city works right squirt?"
"yes momma," i reassured her.
i grabbed eddie by the hand, and began dragging him upstairs. i shut the door, and began to throw clothes into a backpack.
"i'm scared 'chee," eddie whispered with tear-filled eyes.
"don't be. i'll protect you," i told him with a soft smile.
"thank you."
i took his hand in mine. "ready?"
he shook his head. "i think so."
we ran downstairs, just as my mother was ending her phone call with my aunt.
"thank you so much jen," she said, before hanging up. "ok kids listen up, the bus ride is going to be about seven and a half hours. it's ten o'clock now, so that'll put you at about six in the morning."
we nodded, knowing eddie's mother was going to show up at any moment.
"i love you guys," she said, giving us both a quick hug. "be safe."
"yes ma'am," eddie said quickly.
"i love you too mom. see ya soon."
with that, eddie and i ran out of the house, jogging the quick mile to the bus station through a little patch of woods to be sure we weren't seen.
"boy, it's a good thing you don't have that asthma shit anymore," i said breathily.
"oh shut up," he snapped, but ended up giggling a little.
we slid to a stop at the bus station, the greyhound just closing it's doors.
"no wait!" we cried, as we began running after it.
the bus driver took notice, and pulled over, allowing us on.
we gave him the money, getting forty dollars in return.
still panting, eddie and i made our way to the very back of the bus, alone.
"we need to keep our heads down," he whispered to me. "i wouldn't put it past my mom to go to the news about this."
"yeah, but i'm going to be eighteen next week, and you'll be eighteen in less then a month."
"i know. we're adults now. but my mom is crazy."
"you're telling me, eds," i muttered. "she made you believe you were so sick, and made you take all those medicines. you were such a weak kid, i was so worried about you."
i cupped his face with my hand.
"thank you?" he said, though it sounded more like a question.
"you should probably get some rest, ok?" i told him. "i'll stay awake and watch everything."
he nodded. "okay 'chee. i love you."
"i love you too. goodnight."
i watched as he closed his eyes and got himself comfortable by curling into a little ball and using his backpack as a pillow.
i smiled to myself.
