i ushered eddie into my room. he was pale and shaking, but kept assuring me that he was fine when i asked.
i tossed him his pajamas. "here. i'm gonna go get ready for bed. we've got a long day tomorrow!" i grinned.
eddie continued to look at the ground, just nodding.
i sighed, and walked into my bathroom, and began brushing my teeth and washing my face.
i yawned as i walked back into my bedroom, then my mouth dropped open.
"eddie!" i cried, running over and kneeling in front of him. "what's wrong!?"
he didn't respond, he just curled up into a ball tighter and sobbed harder.
"no, no. shh, it's ok baby, it's ok. just talk to me," i whispered as i rubbed small circles on his back.
i pulled eddie into my lap, and his arms were around me in an instant.
"please don't leave me," he gasped between sobs.
"leave you? baby, you know i would never," i whispered, still rubbing his back. "i can't possibly leave you eds. i'm too in love with you."
there was another moment of silence, minus the sniffles from eddie.
"why doesn't my mom love me?" he asked, before breaking down into even harder sobs.
a moment of realization hit me. the megabitch had made eddie question his worth. again.
i cupped eddie's tear-stained face in my hands, wiping away his tears. "she is a cruel woman eds. she only cares about herself. you know that. she made you think you were so sick when we were kids, just to keep you weak and close to her."
he sniffled but nodded, and looked at the ground. "i'm sorry 'chee," he whispered softly.
"don't be baby. everything's gonna be ok. are you ready for bed?"
he nodded. "yeah. i'm excited for tomorrow... and nervous."
"me too. but it's gonna be ok. all of our friends will be there, and my mom and aunt. and cake!"
he giggled, and looked up at me tiredly. "richie, i'm so happy." he gave my hand a light squeeze.
the look in his eye told me he really meant it.
i smiled and bent down, pressing my lips against his. "i'm happy too baby," i hummed. "so much."
eddie crawled into bed, and snuggled under the blanket.
i flipped the lights off and slid in beside eddie.
he snuggled up beside me, and i threw my arm over him.
"it's ok now," i mumbled sleepily before completely passing out.

the next morning was a blur. before i knew it, eddie was walking up towards the alter. towards me.
my heart swelled, almost bursting with happiness.
i could see the smiling faces of our friends and my mom and aunt behind me, but i couldn't bring my eyes away from eddie.
he stepped up on the alter, and i felt a grin break across my face.
he blushed, and i heard a few giggles from the small crowd.
our pastor, who was about as old as dirt, began to speak.
to be honest, i didn't listen to everything he said. i just listened for my cue to say i do.
"if anybody objects, speak now," the pastor called out in a quavering voice, "or forever hold your peace."
nobody spoke, and the pastor opened his mouth to continue.
"i object!"
i snapped my head around and eddie let out a small gasp.
sonia stood in the middle of the room, face as red as anything, and shaking her fist.
"eddie bear," she said in the sickeningly whiny tone. "don't do this!"
eddie turned back around to face me. "don't tell me what to do sonia."
she gasped, fluttering her hands around madly.
"how dare you talk to your mother like that!"
"you're not my mother."
"wha-? i birthed you edward, i'm pretty sure i am your mother!" she snapped.
"mothers are people who care about you, and are willing to do anything for you!" eddie's voice shook, nearly cracking. "when have you ever done that for me?"
"eddie bear, i love you!"
"how can you love me?" he voice cracked this time, and tears flooded his cheeks. "you don't even know me!"
he turned back to the pastor. "please continue."
the pastor continued. "do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
     "i do," i said with a smile.
     "do you?" he asked eddie.
eddie returned the smile. "i do."
"no!" sonia shrieked, before turning around and storming out of the church.
i saw tears begin to fill up in eddie's eyes again.
"you may now kiss your husband."
i cupped eddie's face in my hands, and placed my lips gently against his.
"it's gonna be ok baby," i reassured him quietly as the small crowd cheered.
"i know," he said with a sniffle and a small smile.
"congratulations young men," the pastor told us, clapping us on the back.
before we knew it, all of our friends were surrounding us in a hug.
"congratulations g-guys!" i heard bill say.
bev and mike came and wrapped me in a hug, while stanley gave eddie a hug. ben and bill were talking excitedly.
"guys i'm so happy for you!" bev squealed. "this is so exciting!"
"are you guys going back to new york?" ben asked us.
eddie looked over at me, and i shrugged.
"i don't know. i'm sure we'll visit. why do you ask?"
"well, i was gonna wait and tell you guys, but i got accepted to columbia university!"
eddie let out a surprised laugh. "congratulations ben!"
"wow really? that's so cool!" bev said.
     "yeah!"  i agreed.
the rest of our friends nodded along.

that night, lying in bed with the love of my life, i felt myself truly smile for the first time in months.
     i married my best friend.
i couldn't stop grinning stupidly. i rolled over on my side to look at eddie.
i knew he probably wouldn't remember this day as happily as i was, due to his mother, but now he didn't have her negativity in his life anymore.
i cupped his face with my hand. his eyes fluttered open.
     "hey 'chee," he hummed.
     "hi baby."
"are you ok?" he asked me.
"yes, i am. are you?" i questioned.
he didn't respond for a moment, and i assumed he fell asleep, so i closed my eyes.
"i'm perfect 'chee... thank you so much for everything you've done for me." his voice shook as he spoke.
"i love you," i whispered to him, wrapping my arms around eddie's small frame.
"i love you more," he breathed, and i felt a tear hit my collarbone.
"don't cry baby," i soothed, rubbing his back. "everything is ok now. i'll keep you safe."
"i know 'chee. thank you for everything."
     "you're welcome baby."
after a few minutes, his breathing slowed down, and he snuggled into me.
"i love you baby," i whispered, before falling asleep.
