i watched eddie close his eyes. after mere seconds his breathing had slowed down, and i knew he had fallen asleep again.
i was enticed by his beauty. the way his long eyelashes brushed his cheeks when his eyes were closed, and how a million freckles shown on his face like stars when he was still.
i cupped his face with my hand, and kissed his forehead. "i'm going to kill henry bowers," i vowed.
i slowly got out of bed, taking care not to jostle the mattress. then, i quietly walked back downstairs. i grabbed my parents phone book, and flipped to the 'd' section.
"denbrough, denbrough, denbrough!"
i typed the the numbers, and listened to it ring.
after the fifth or sixth ring, somebody answer. "huh-hullo?"
"bill?" i asked quietly into the phone so i wouldn't wake up eddie.
i was met with silence for a moment. "ruh-richie?"
"yeah, big bill, it's me. can i ask you a favor?"
     "it's t-three a.m. but i mean, y-yeah. what do y-you need?"
"i need you to promise me you won't tell anybody first."
     "i promise," he said quickly.
i inhaled. "eddie got raped last night."
a loud clatter from the other side of the phone made me pull away quickly; bill had dropped the phone.
after a moment he was back. "i-is h-he ok? do i need to c-come over? what do i need t-to do?"
"can you meet me on the corner in fifteen minutes?" i asked him.
     "y-yeah. that's fine."
"See you in a few. oh, and take your bike!" i added.

i rode to the corner, and saw the silhouette of bill on silver. i hopped off my bike to give bill a hug.
     "h-hey r-richie!" he said. "h-how have you b-been?"
     "i'm good. how about you?"
"i'm d-doing about as good as i can be. s-so what are we d-doing?"
i pointed back to my bike, which had a package of toilet paper. "papering bowers' house."
bill laughed, it was the first genuine sound i'd heard from him. "s-sweet."
with that, we hopped on our bikes and rode off.
"we s-should see if m-mike wants to c-come! he lives r-right beside b-bowers!"
he was right, but this was already risky enough. still, we needed all the people we could get. "let's do it," i agreed.
we rode up mike's long, gravel driveway and crept quietly around to his bedroom window. we knocked on it.
he opened it in a matter of seconds, looking dead tired.
     "richie? bill?" he asked incredulously.
"it's us," i said, and bill and i both laughed. "would you like to help us with something?"
he bit his lip, but nodded. "what are we doing?"
"papering b-bowers h-house," bill told mike.
"oh my god yes! but, uhh, why?"
bill looked down at me. "eddie got raped last night by henry. he was a mess. we're gonna report him later in the morning."
mike's mouth dropped open in surprise. "is he ok?" mike asked.
"yeah. i just want this to be quick so i can get back to eddie."
"well then let's go!" mike said, crawling out of his window.
bill and i grinned at each other. "w-we all need to b-be quiet," bill warned us.
"you act like i've never papered this house before," mike scoffed.
"wait really?" i laughed quietly as we pulled up the bowers' driveway.
"yeah," he whispered.
we rolled to a stop, and cautiously got off our bikes, ready to run. I grabbed a roll of toilet paper and chucked it as hard as i could. it hit the roof and rolled to the other side. i pumped my fists in the air.
bill and mike followed suit, and soon, every exterior inch of the house was covered in toilet paper.
"ok, we need to go now!" mike hissed, pointing at the other end of the house, where a light had just been turned on.
i'd never rode my bike so fast.

"i can't believe we did that!" i cried, giving a high five to both mike and bill once we returned back to mike's house.
"we need to get the losers club back together man," mike said, and bill nodded in agreement.
"i'll get on that," i said with a smile.
"you coming back with me?" i asked bill.
he shook his head no. "i'm gonna catch up with m-mike for a bit. but please call me when you get an idea for us all to m-meet up!"
"i will!" i hopped on my bike, and pedaled away as fast as i could.

i pulled in the driveway, and checked my watch. i had only been gone a little over an hour, but i really regretted leaving eddie alone.
i walked up to my room. he was still laying right where i left him, fast asleep. i breathed a sigh of relief, and went to lay back down.
i wrapped my arm around him, and pulled him to my chest.
"'chee?" his voice was so quiet i couldn't tell if he had just spoken or if i just thought i heard it.
"hmm?" i asked quietly; my heart skipped a beat.
"where did you go?" he asked shakily.
"i-i had to do something. but i'm back now," i reassured him.
he swallowed thickly. "i woke up and you w-weren't here. i got scared," he sniffled.
     "no, don't cry honey," i whispered. "i'm sorry i left. i won't leave again. i promise."
he snuggled into my chest. "thank you 'chee."
"just try to sleep. i'll take you too the police station in the morning."
his eyes flew open; they were puffy and red-rimmed. "i don't wanna go anymore," he told me quickly.
"what?" i cried. "why not, eds?"
he bit his lip. "because," he sniffled again. "his dad is an officer..." he trailed off.
"oh, shit. you're right," i breathed. shit. i hope he doesn't find out who papered his house!
     "so what?" i asked eddie.
"i-if he hears me talking about his son... he-he'll probably shoot me."
"we can make the report to another officer. i promised you eddie, i wouldn't let anybody hurt you ever again, and i plan on carrying out on that promise."
he smiled up at me, letting out a small sob. "thanks 'chee." he wrapped his arms around me.
"just try to sleep, love," i whispered.  "i'll keep you safe."
