i woke up with a start, blinking multiple times in the darkness.
"richie?" i called out.
my only answer was my voice echoing back at me.
i swallowed thickly, my chest tightening.
"richie?!" i called out again, praying i'd get an answer.
i saw a figure walking towards me.
i gasped. "stanley?" i choked.
he knelt down in front of me, smiling softly. "hi eds." his voice was faint.
"stanley... you're dead," i mumbled.
he chuckled. "it seems so, huh?"
i nodded before my eyes welled up with tears. "am i dead?"
"that's up to you to decide. if you want to continue to live, you need to wake up before this whole place crumbles. i can help you... or, you could come with me?"
i wanted to go with stanley so badly. i was cold.
"is it nice where you are? is it safe?" i sniffled.
"i'm happy there eds. but you don't want to go with me, do you?"
i shook my head no. "i want richie," i whispered.
"good choice." stanley smiled at me. "now let's get you awake, ok?"
i nodded as stanley cupped my face in his hands. warmth filled my body.
my eyes flew back open. "i don't wanna leave you!"
"i'll be here when you're ready, ok eds? i'll be here, i promise." with a last smile, he faded away.

my eyes shot open. i gasped for breath as i looked around the musty sewer. i had to get out. stanley told me to.
i stood quickly to my feet, but screamed and crumpled to the ground, withering in pain.
i touched my side, inhaling sharply when my hand came back bloody. i looked down to see a gaping hole in my side.
i gagged, squeezing my eyes closed tightly.
a sudden crash caused my eyes to fly back open. the cave ceiling was crumbling down to the ground. if i didn't get moving, i'd be crushed.
i began crawling back the way we had come earlier today. i was sliding down a slick rock, face first into grey water.
i came up coughing and choking, but still continued until i reached the exit. i pulled myself out into the setting sunlight, chest heaving.
i leaned my head back on the soft dirt and closed my eyes.
"oh my god, are you ok?"
i reopened my eyes, seeing two young men with a pomeranian.
"yeah, i'm fine," i told them weakly.
one of the men knelt down beside me. "hi," he said slowly. "my name is adrian. this is my boyfriend don. would you like us to call an ambulance?"
"yes please," i mused before everything went black.

i woke up in a hospital room, hooked up to a heart monitor. on a table, there was a boutique of many different flowers.
i vaguely wondered who they were from. a nurse walked in.
"hi, i'm charlie. what's your name?" they asked me gently.
"eddie... eddie kasprak. who are the flowers from?"
"well mr. kasprak, is there anybody you'd like me to call for you? and the flowers are from the two young men that called the ambulance. they said to wish you a speedy recovery."
i chuckled. "they're so cute. and do you have a pay phone i can use?"
"there's one in the lobby. you can access it tomorrow," they explained.
i smiled. "ok. thank you."
i closed my eyes and fell back asleep.
i reawoke at three a.m. to another nurse administering fluid in my iv.
"hello," he said merrily.
"hi. umm, is there any way i can access the pay phone in the lobby?" i asked him sweetly.
he bit his lip. "i'm really not supposed to, but let me check and see if my boss is at the front desk."
i giggled as he walked out.
a few moments later he came back in with a wheel chair.
"ok, i'll have to assist you down just in case we see her."
"that's fine."
he helped me into the wheelchair and pushed me in to the elevator.
he rolled me to the phone, then informed me he was going to get food.
"do you want anything?" he asked me cheerfully.
"no thank you," i said with a smile.
he shrugged and walked away, leaving me toy call.
i punched in what i hoped was richie's number.
it rang for just a few seconds.
"hello?" his voice sounded rough, as if he'd been crying.
"richie?" i breathed, tears welling up in my eyes.
"who is this?" his voice sounded angrier now.
"it's me, 'chee, eddie," i told him.
"i'm sorry. the only eddie i know is dead." he definitely sounded angry this time. and drunk. "goodby-"
"richie wait!" i cried.
"yes?"
"before you left me there... you told me you loved me..."
"oh my god eddie. it really is you!"
i laughed as tears began streaming down my face. "mhm."
"holy shit... i left you there eddie! i left you to die! i'm a terrible friend oh my god," he gasped.
i sniffled. "you didn't leave me 'chee. stanley was there. he helped me."
"w-what?"
"he helped me get out 'chee," i told him, worried he'd hang up on me.
"o-oh... uh, ok."
we sat in silence for a moment.
"where are you? i'm coming to get you."
"i'm in derry hospital right now. where are you?"
"i'm back in cali, but i swear i'll be there by noon tomorrow ok?"
"ok 'chee."
"bye eds."
"wait 'chee! i-i love you too."
"oh! wait really?"
"yeah." i giggled. "good night now."
"good night love. i'll see you tomorrow."
i placed the phone back in the cradle, and turned around to see my nurse.
"ready?" he asked me.
i smiled. "yes."
once i was situated back in my room, i quickly fell asleep.
i was awoken at eight a.m. with yet another nurse bringing me a plate of gross hospital breakfast.
"we've gotten a call from a richie tozier. he said he'll be here at ten thirty!" she told me happily.
it was almost worth the shitty food just to be able to see richie again.
