Eliza checked the baby over and she said he was perfectly healthy, we already knew that by the set of lungs that seemed to crack open on him. I never realised a baby could scream louder than Jayden.
After a few minutes of the loving couple cooing over their new baby, Adam cut the cord with tears in his eyes. My head felt like it had received a bolt because I was still completely stunned by everything that I witnessed but by the pounding of my heart, that seemed to be more alive than ever.
I stood up and looked at myself in the mirror above the sink, I had mascara lines down my still flushed cheeks and there was a message within my eyes. A message telling me that something had changed, something I was not sure I was quite ready to listen to.
I proceeded to wash my face with cold water and with the sound of the tap running near my ears I blanked out Adam who had unbeknownst to me walked over. As I felt a tap on my shoulder my whole body shook and my jittery eyes met Adam's in the mirror.
"Sorry," he shyly spoke, for which I shook my head and gave him a smile. "Eliza is going to help Riley get out of the bath so she can deliver the placenta so I thought I'd clean up the little one."
"Can I help?" I offered and dried my face on a towel.
"Could you grab the baby wipes, nappy and clothes from the bed for me, please?"
"Sure," Adam laid the baby down on the floor and opened up the towel he was wrapped in.
I quickly strode into the bedroom, my eyes landing on the items on the bed. I retrieved them before I headed back into the bathroom.
"What the hell is that?" I screamed when I saw an eruption of green land in the towel. It resembled very much a toxic waste plant throwing out its slime.
"That's baby's first poo!" Adam laughed as he held up the corners of the towel so it wouldn't splash on him.
"Oh, god! That's disgusting," I croaked and grabbed a couple of clean towels from the pile. Once I set the items down from the bedroom on the floor along with the fresh linen, Adam and I worked as a team to clean up the baby.
The soiled towel was discarded as Adam slid it across the floor and it stopped just short of an already mountain-high pile of dirty clothes and towels. Adam worked to clean off the poop the baby had somehow managed to get halfway up his back and all over his legs whilst I had the task of putting a clean and now nappy-attired baby into a babygrow.
Baby Miller who was cushioned on a fluffy towel in front of me on the floor was peacefully asleep with his little fingers tightly wrapped around my index finger as though he was hanging on for dear life.
I saw out of the corner of my eye that Adam who was faffing around tidying up things in the near vicinity kept peeking over towards me every half a minute. I wasn't sure if he was keeping an eye on me or that he couldn't tear his love-stained eyes away from his son.
I had baby's hat scrunched up in the palm of my hand and I gently ran one of my perfectly painted seductress red nail-polished fingers across his forehead before drawing circles across his dark hair. This baby entered the world with the kind of luscious hair that I could run my fingers through all day and I was utterly jealous.
"It's the Miller trait."
"Hmm?" I murmured and looked up to see Adam carefully watching me with a glint in his eye which only made me furrow my brows at him.
"That dark hair, it's a Miller trait. But those dark eyes of ours are our secret weapons, they're what we use to entrap people into our family," I laughed at Adam's truth.
