[SIMULATION FAILED.]
"Nice work, TAILOR,"
You winced at Pidge's harsh remark towards Lance. Yet again, you and your team had failed the flight simulation. Privately, you felt as if you were to blame for this one, as once again, you couldn't do your job to even speak up, much less act as a co-pilot.
"Roll out, donkeys!"
Your heart filled with dread at the sound of Commander Iverson's thundering voice. A real no-nonsense man, true to his job, you were terrified of your teacher. With resigned sighs of defeat, you, Pidge, Hunk, and Lance exited the simulation cockpit to stand in front of Iverson and your whole class.
Iverson eyed the quartet judgingly, then turned to face the rest of the cadets. "Well, let's see if we can't use this complete failure as a lesson for the rest of you students. Can anyone point out the mistakes these four so-called cadets made in the simulator?"
One student raised his hand. "The engineer puked in the main gearbox!"
"Yes, as everyone knows, vomit is NOT an approved lubricant for engine systems. What else?"
"The comm spec removed his safety harness,"
"The co-pilot gave no advance warnings to oncoming hazards!"
"The pilot crashed!"
"Correct," Iverson said curtly. "And worst of all, the whole jump, they're arguing with each other! Heck, if you're going to be this bad individually, you'd better at least be able to work as a team! Galaxy Garrison exists to turn young cadets like you into the next generation of elite astro-explorers, but these kinds of mental mistakes are exactly what cost the lives of the men on the Kerberos Mission."
You felt your back prickle with indignation as your memory recalled the kind face, personality, and teachings of Takashi Shirogane, your would-be adoptive father. You were born to two unnamed parents, both of who died inexplicably in what the media called an innocent car crash. You spent ten long years in an abusive orphanage which worsened your confidence with each passing day. However, you got your first break when Shiro and Adam, an engaged gay couple, set up applications to adopt you and kept you in their house for that time-being. However, two years later, Shiro went away on the Kerberos mission and without him to complete the application, Adam was forced to surrender you back into the orphanage.
Seeing the Galaxy Garrison as your only chance to find out where he was, you joined in this class as a co-pilot. Still, hearing the news that Shiro was dead made you angry, and before you could stop yourself, you quietly mumbled that they weren't dead.
Unfortunately for you, Iverson had radar ears, which picked up your little statement. He wheeled on you immediately, eyes flaring. "What did you say?!"
You faced the floor, instantly regretting your small outburst, but Iverson wouldn't back down. "Speak up, would you?! Believe me, it'd do you a great service, considering your cowardice failed the rest of your team!"
"Leave her alone!" Pidge snapped out of nowhere, truly a more daring move than yours. "She just misses someone she knew on that voyage! Is that really so wrong?"
Iverson looked ready to burst, but Lance, sensing trouble, stepped in and clamped a hand over Pidge's mouth. "Sorry, sir! I-I-I think he may have hit his head when he fell out of his chair. But point taken."
The commander backed down from his livid expression, but he wasn't going to let Lance slip away without chewing him out first. "I hope I don't need to remind you that the only reason you're here is that the best pilot in your class had a discipline issue and flunked out."
