Itachi POV:
She moved so fast, I wasn't even sure how she did it. The sickening sound of Samehada biting at her flesh filled the air. Kakashi screamed her name as she stumbled back into his arms then he yanked her away from Kisame. I had to act fast, she was one of the few I couldn't let get hurt. A promise I made to Shisui.
I moved between Kisame and Y/n, immediately putting her into a Genjutsu. She went limp in Kakashi's arms and I breathed a small sigh of relief. Now I just had to get Kisame to retreat. I didn't look back, threatening Kakashi silently.
"We should go." I spoke to Kisame, eyes still fixed on the pair in front of me.
"What? Now's the time to attack."
"If something happens to her, you'll have two of the Sannin coming after you. And," I finally cut my eyes back to Kisame, "I've told you not to touch her before." Kisame narrowed his eyes at me, but placed Samehada at his back.
Kakashi lifted her, carrying her gently like a bride. I always suspected something would happen between them. The way she looked at him, the way he protected her. The night of the massacre, I lingered long enough to see him with her, he kissed her temple so gently, held her so close. He's loved her all along.
"You've gone soft, Itachi." Kisame smirked at me before turning around to walk away.
"Why?" Was all Kakashi said.
"I made a promise I intend to keep." I answered as monotone as I could.
"She always loved you like a brother." Kakashi's eyes softened as he spoke.
I turned around and walked away. I had to keep my stoic front, Kakashi couldn't see me falter. Nor Kisame. I hid behind my cloak now, letting the small smile dance on my features for only a moment. I know she loved Shisui, deeply, but I can see Kakashi has her heart now. And she, has his.
Kakashi POV
"Y/n!" I shouted.
It all happened so fast. She was next to me, behind me and now in front of me. I heard Samehada cut through her flesh and muscle, the smell of copper filling my nose. I pulled her back as Kisame tried to yank Samehada through her ANBU flak. She wavered in my arms a moment.
Itachi was in front us out of nowhere and I tensed as Y/n went completely limp in my arms. He put her in a Genjutsu. I was on guard, watching the pair carefully. I didn't have a lot of options at the moment. She was a sitting duck no matter what.
"We should go." Itachi spoke to Kisame, but held my stare, his Sharingan spinning dangerously.
"What? Now's the time to attack." Kisame countered with a sinister smirk on his face.
"If something happens to her, you'll have two of the Sannin coming after you. And," Itachi looked back to Kisame as he continued, "I've told you not to touch her before." Kisame gave Itachi an unimpressed look, but stood down.
I lifted Y/n, holding her close to me, finding comfort in her body being close to mine. She seemed lighter than usual, has she lost weight? I couldn't dwell on the thought now.
"You've gone soft, Itachi." Kisame chimed as he smirked and walked away.
"Why?" I asked as Kisame's figure disappeared into the trees.
"I made a promise I intend to keep." His voice was cold and distant.
"She always loved you like a brother." I admitted to Itachi.
Itachi turned away without a word, but I could sense a change in his demeanor for a split second. She was right, he was hiding something. Itachi and Y/n we're close when they were younger, she was 3 years older if I recall correctly.
