Chloe dropped me off in school and went to hers; a nearby college. I'm sixteen and I go to a pretty amazing high school...." See you later sis ", I called after her. She waved and then drove off.
I stepped into the school, and phew! It was right about time I got there, 'cause first period was going to start soon.
I took my books from my pink and blue locker and threw in those I won't be using. I still have like fifteen minutes before class begin.
I must say, I don't like going to classes late. It feels awkward; walking into the class and everyone stares at you...*shudder*
I slumped down in my seat and put my bag on the floor. No one is here yet, ah! I put on my pink headphones and.......( OK now you guys know my favorite color is pink, an additional color is blue😘 )
Ok, so I listen a slow love song and I guess I got carried away and sang along to the music. Loudly. I didn't even notice when the students filed in. The music came to an end and as I opened my eyes to change the music, that's when I noticed the whole class staring at me in awe.
Okay......
I don't know what to do, I just sit there and fiddle with my phone. A boy in front whistle, a girl clapped and before you know it the whole class is applauding me.
...I am a really good singer I guess...
The teacher came in finally and everyone turned their attention to the lecture going on. I didn't even realize my best friend had already taken her seat next to mine, " that was amazing Becky", she said smiling
"Well what can I say, I am good at it", I said proudly
"You know it girl".....At lunch, we both took our spot in the cafeteria. I had noodles, fried chicken and cupcakes.....well don't judge me, I love doing two things in life, singing and eating.
"You sure you're gonna finish that?", Sophie, my best friend asked, "wait, I forgot you're a glutton".
I smacked her hand. "Ouch", she said. I smiled at her, "food is my life. You should get that".
" glutton", she said again. I stuck out my tongue to her. "...but I know how much you hate singing in front of people Becky...."
Yeah, she so got me..
I looked down at my food, " I know, I just can't.....I don't even know how to explain it".
" You've gotta get rid of your fears"
I sighed. Sophie's right. I only sing in front of my sister and mom. I always sing for my dad too.......when he was around. "Believe me, I try. I just can't. I don't know why though" l look up at her finally, her knowing and concerned friendly brown eyes were locked in mine, " it's just....."
I was interrupted by a shriek that came from the other end of the cafeteria. A girl was holding an orange cake for another girl; the one who shrieked. " Oh, I forgot ", Sophie said, " it's Midge's birthday today "
" Aww" I said. Midge took the cake from the girl and gave a wide grin. " Make a wish Midge ", the girl said, and Midge closed her eyes for a second and gleefully out the candles. Everyone in the lunch hall were practically clapping now.
"Well", she said, "a birthday song will follow now. Would anyone like to volunteer to sing for dear Midge here?"
She scanned through the hall and her gaze landed on me. Hell no..., "Becky......" , she said out loud, "would you do us the honour of singing happy birthday to Midge?"
How could she do this to me? sometimes I wonder how people get to know that I can sing. Perhaps when I sing to myself they just happen to hear....not that I sing for them. "Well...?" she continued.
I can't,....not in front of all these people.....I just can't.... " Sorry, I'm not really a good singer", I managed to say while a lump formed in my throat.
" Nonsense! we all know you're a great singer, Becky, right guys?".....she asked the rest of the students.....
" Yeah "....they all shouted and clapped. great. just great...
" You can do it Beck", ... Sophie said. I totally forgot she was sitting right in front of me as my eyes drifted to hers, " I know you can ".
No, you don't.... My legs did it's thing by getting up. I walked as fast as I could to the bathroom and shit the door tight. I splashed the cold water on my face. Good thing I didn't wear any form of makeup today.
It wasn't the same anymore. After my dad left for some reasons I don't know..., I locked up myself and my great gift of singing as well.
My dad was an amazing singer. He plays the guitar, and so when I was like five, he nutured me to be a great singer. He said he saw it in me, and I eventually grew to love singing, and with my beautiful voice.....no one could resist it. But now....
" You okay ", Sophie's voice interrupted my thoughts.
" Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine ". I already felt tears wanting to gush out...
" You sure?" .... she asked again, this time wrapping me in a big hug. Suddenly, I heard singing coming from the hall. They were all singing the birthday song for Midge. " Do you think they'll hate me now? cause I refused to sing for her?"
" Why would they? don't worry about it. They probably think that you have a cold ".
"Okay", I sniffed a bit. "Let's go to class Soph"
