What could have been Jeong Hyeok thoughts, that night, with Yoon Se Ri sleeping next to him, on their way to Pyongyang? Just a few days before her departure, what could be tormenting him, alone, in the dark, with that beautiful lady peacefully sleeping on his lap?
Jeong Hyeok tried his best not to move, while Yoon Se Ri was sleeping on his lap. The night was surprisingly warm at the open field and, even if the blanket was strong enough to keep them from the cold, what he was feeling was disturbing enough to keep him awaken and so aware of his situation that exact moment...
There they were. Alone, by the fire, waiting for the morning to come, to return to their trip to Pyongyang... He looked at her. So beautiful, so vulnerable, depending on him to survive... she was so strong and so fragile at the same time...
A lock of her hair fell from her shoulder and he fixed it, as gently and softly as he could... All of her amazed him, her way of challenging him, her way of always look on the bright side of life, keeping the positive spirit high... even if the odds were against her.
The truth was he could no longer remember his own life before her. She had brought colour, laughter and a considerable level of uncertainty to his so controlled and flawless routine. He, above all men, who had been so allergic to lies and hidden tricks, was now hiding a southern woman, from the Country and from his fiancée. He sighed, for a second. Dan... Dan. The fiancée he knew he had, the woman who was part of his life but that, somehow meant so little to him. Inevitably, he compared the two women: Dan, an icy princess, always so cold, so strict, so formal... of course there was no love between them, as a matter of fact, he had never noticed her until his father had communicated him he was supposed to marry that girl. She was beautiful, yes, but they had so little in common... And then, there was Yoon Se Ri. A ray of light, in his dull life. The woman who had crashed landed on his arms, who had settled in his place, acting like the true owner of his house (!), bonding with his men and the women of the village. The woman who immediately started to make her way, in order for him to get a promotion... The woman who believed him to be a nobody... The proficient pianist, so sure of herself, yet so lost in that unfriendly country. Oh... that woman...
He looked at her. He liked her. Yes, he did. A lot. But he wouldn't, he couldn't admit that to her... he was engaged and if, there was something to happen between them, their story was doomed from the beginning... there was a political border keeping them apart and she had to go back. She had to return... But then, he wondered... Yes, but what if she'd stay?
No... no... he rejected that thought, keeping that silly idea away from his mind and his heart. She would never stay. Even if they'd manage a weird way of making her stay... no, no... that would never happen. She had to go. She and her smile, her cherry lips, her silky hair...
- Jeong Hyeok...
He felt her moving gently on his lap. She must be cold... He then pushed the blanket closer to her shoulders...
- Shhhhh... There...
- Thank you, Jeong Hyeok... thank you... You really are a special man... A true knight...
His heart pounded. There. With a simple «Thank you... you are special... a knight», she had the power to break all his resistance and find her place in his heart, like a small dove... And all the sudden, he was making things to her, he'd never expected he could do to anyone... cooking noodles, buying all sort of thing to make her smile, and even baking clams, just to make her happy. He couldn't give her Gangnam, but he had made the perfect coffee, just to see her happy. And if that wasn't love, he didn't know what that was...
He recalled the day before, when she had given his man «her finger hearts»... That had hurt. That had made him pouter, but most of all, that had made him realize what was between them wasn't that special to her, after all.
Not far from them, a baby started crying. He looked his way and saw a young woman breastfeeding him... That made him smile. For the first time in years, someone had made him think about his future and how he could still be happy, even though he had lost his life in Switzerland, his career... his piano. He moved his fingers, as if he was touching some keys of his old piano. Then, he let his hand gently fall on her hair. She had said such beautiful things that evening. On how she'd hoped him to be happy, no matter the train he'd catch. Could there be hope for him? Could he be happy again? Wish for a family, the love of a woman... kids?
And what was the role of Yoon Se Ri in his destiny? Just to open his eyes, remind him he was still alive or, could she mean anything else? What about all he was beginning to feel for her? Or the way he liked to look at her, admire her, when she was not looking, or when she was busy making her best to make herself useful, doing some cleaning of cooking?
His eyes starred the sky, the fantastic sky, decorated with millions of stars, as if they were showing him the only way to happiness, to a station which had Yoon Se Ri's name all over it...
The next morning, Jeong Hyeok woke her up, just in time to catch the train. She was grumpy in the beginning but immediately changed her mood when he got her some coffee and a sandwich. The Piky Princess was fun to watch... while eating with her full mouth, she would ask about the most trivial things, while they were passing by some villages... She enjoyed learning more about his country and, with all the patience in the world, he would explain, never taking sides, but making her understand she shouldn't do it either...
And when they arrived at Pyongyang he couldn't hide a smile, seeing her so amazed, so thrilled... That was who Se Ri was. A sophisticated woman, sometimes, a cute, fun girl, ready to discover the world, holding his hand...
Every once and a while, Yoon Se Ri would look at him, pass by the military controls, so confident, so strong, so elegant... and then, she would find that special pounding in her heart, too. That sense of being protected made her feel so attracted to him...
«If only your rank was higher...», she'd think to herself. He'd be the perfect prince, the perfect man to have by her side. For a moment, she stopped. What was she thinking? He was the perfect man for her... totally her type! And, most of all, a good man, with principles, who made her see that, there she was not a princess but a woman, with ideas of her own, with strengths and weaknesses that had nothing to do with her bank account. For the first time, a man cared for her for who she was and not for what she could provide him and that thought made her want to cry.
Noticing she had stayed behind, Jeong Hyeok reached her and, seeing her teary eyes e touched her in the arm and whispered:
- Come on, Yoon Se Ri... we're almost there... in a couple of days you'll be home and all this nightmare will be just that, a bad dream, so please stay with me... we are so close...
She looked at him and smiled. She was smiling, yes, but feeling a huge pain in her heart. She would leave, yes, but he would stay there... Jeong Hyeok, his kind and noble heart, his protection and his glances, and all he made her feel would remain there, thousands of miles away from her...
- Jeong Hyeok... - she whispered.
He took her by the hand and pushed her, gently, to start walking:
- What you need is a nice bath and some sleep...
She started walking but, in her mind, only one thought: «No, Jeong Hyeok... that's not what I need... You are so wrong... I'm starting to feel that what I really need is precisely here, by my side, and I don't know how to deal with that...».
