You sat by a large tree atop a hill, where the whole city could be see from above. It was a chilly and bright afternoon, the leaves dancing along with the wind as you grabbed a fistful of them and extended your arm, opening the palm of your hand. The brown and green leaves flew away with the wind farther and farther away from you, as shifted your eyes towards the Trainee camp below.
Training was dismissed earlier due to an important meeting, consisting of all squad leaders, corporals, commanders, etc. that was confidential, and all the cadets had taken the time to relax and spend time with each other for the free time. You, on the other hand, wanted to enjoy the afternoon alone, time passing by slowly before the sun started to disappear from the walls, the moon beginning to take its place to light the skies.
I wish that I could just enjoy this moment freely, not being trapped behind the gates of safety... I want to chase the sun, reach the ends of the Earth, feel free for the first time....
Your thoughts were interrupted as a shuffling of leaves behind you erupted from the bushes, the sudden noise causing you to jump and turn your head around in alert.
"Who's there?" You asked, feeling a bit paranoid. There was no reply as you turned your head back to the view, hugging your bent legs closer to your body as you looked above the wall tops.
Probably just some bird or small animal...
The cold winds began to pick up again, and you sighed at the feeling of fresh air being soaked your (s/c) skin. You decided to hum an unfamiliar tune as you sighed in relief once more. Soon enough, an hour passed and the sun completely disappeared beyond the horizon, and you finally stood up. You stretched your body as you took one last look at the city before returning back to camp, so no one would worry about where you'd been and why you weren't been at dinner.
You begin walking down a familiar trail as it led you back towards the camp, and you walked straight towards the Dining Hall, your stomach growling for food. Lunch didn't fill you up properly, so you were waiting anxiously for dinner time later on.
You pushed towards the large wisdom doors, revealing cadets eating and conversing at their tables. You spotted your table, with Reiner, Bertholdt, Connie, Marco, and Jean sitting there. You mentally smiled to yourself as you grabbed your dinner and sat in your usual seat, across from Reiner and next to Connie.
"Oh, hey (y/n). Where'd you been?" Reiner questions as he took a bite out of his bread.
"Nothing. Just went to go enjoy the weather after sundown." You replied, baking in the taste of your soup from your metallic spoon. Reiner nodded in reply as he side glanced towards Bertholdt, who was looking down at his plate with a frown on his face.
"Bertl. You okay man?" he asked, poking his shoulder. Bertholdt looked up as his gaze was fixed on especially on you, sadness filling his green eyes. You locked your (e/c) orbs on his, filled with concerned. He quickly averted his gaze after thirty seconds of staring before he lightly shook his head.
"Uh, yeah, I'm fine." he replied with a deep, timid voice. You couldn't help but feel worried and concerned about him. He was one of your closest best friends, after all. You wondered about what he was so bothered about.
"Bertl, you don't look fine. Is something bothering you?" You asked, putting your spoon down.
"No..."
You sighed as he kept denying and lying about his true emotions. It was clearly obvious that something was on his mind. When you knew that one of your friends were sad or acting strange, you were determined to find out the root of the problem.
