Ellison Taylor
Around 4:25pm, I turned off my computer to grab my things to go and meet Kingsley. I made sure all my things was away as I'm calling it a day.
Kingsley was already waiting in the lobby and was checking his phone when I called out to him.
"Hey." He smiled as he slipped his phone to his pocket. "How is your day going?"
"Not bad, yourself?" I asked as I started walking towards the exit. He followed beside me.
"Too much work load." He frowned. "I think I have to work at home this weekend."
"I'm sure you will finish before the weekend! It's Monday." I said.
"Trust me, I won't. I have meetings to attend this week and then make the files on weekends to submit next Friday. How exciting that can be." He rolled his eyes as we started crossing the road.
"That sounds like a plan." I said sympathizing him. I know how it feels to have to work during weekends. "I have to push back my things for next week." I frowned. "I had to ask for off next week."
"Why? Is everything okay?" He said as he looked at me with worries in his eyes. It's heartwarming, but weird at the same time.
"My cousins are coming down, so.." I said as we stopped at Michael's sandwich store. He pulled the door open for me and we walked in to the delicious smell of the greasy fries and sauces.
What was surprising was Ian who was sitting in the corner with three people and I caught his eyes because he looked surprised and then glared when he saw who was with me. I give an acknowledging nods in return and look away, pretending I didn't see his glare. Kingsley was busy looking at the menu and he asked.
"What would you like?" He asked as he flipped through the menu book that he just got from the front.
"I'll have the Lox Bagel sandwich with on side roasted potatoes and Earl Grey Tea." I said.
"Cool, we can go ahead." He said as we stood in line very aware of the eyes on us. I squirm in discomfort as I can feel his eyes on us and I turned to look and saw him with one raised eye-brow. What's his problem? I can't hang out with my colleague without his stares? Jeez.
"Good evening. How may I help you?" The woman was cheerful and attentive with our orders. We were asked if we wanted a take out or dine in.
"Take out." I said at the same time Kingsley responded with a "dine in"
"You want to go back in the office to eat?" He asked and I flushed with embarrassment.
"Just dine in, then." I said. I'm not going to go back to the office. If he wants to stare he can.
I made sure we sat in a booth which was further away from him and his stares.
"If you're uncomfortable here, we can go?" Kingsley said.
"No, I'm fine." I said and give him a small smile.
"You saw someone that you know?" He asked.
I shake my head and give him a reassuring smile.
Mid-way talking about our work stresses. Someone cleared their throat and interrupted us and we looked at the person. Of course, I was waiting for him to join. Note the sarcasm.
"Mr. Collins?" Kingsley said surprised as he stood up.
"Hello, Mr. Miller." Ian acknowledged him coolly but his features said otherwise. Kingsley was a bit surprised. Most likely due to the fact that our boss remembers his name.
"What a pleasure to see you here." Kingsley said. "Would you like to join us for a cup of coffee?"
I was hoping he wouldn't ask but Kingsley is way too nice.
"Of course." Ian said and he slipped into the booth that I was sitting. Kingsley tried to hide his curiosity and I was very well aware of my rudeness. I didn't greet him and simply scowled at him. Kingsley asked Ian for his order.
"Just iced latte." And took out his MasterCard.
"It's on me, sir." Kingsley said politely.
"Maybe next time." Ian smiled but his tone was authoritative and left no room for Kingsley's to deny.
"Yes sir." Kingsley said as he went to line up.
"What are you trying to do?" I glared at him.
"I'm here to sit and talk to my employees. I can't do that now?" He tilt his head to one side and looked at me with amusement.
"You and I both know, you are not here for that reason." I said as I put folded my arms.
"Stop pouting." He mumbled. "I was just curious what you guys were doing here?"
"I finished my work and I'm here to grab evening snacks with my coworker. I can't do that?"
"You can, but why just him? What about the others?" He questioned.
"He's the only coworker I hang out with after work." I said and he rolled his eyes.
"Of course." He said. "Well, next time do invite me when you plan to go for evening snacks or dinner or whatever."
"Why?"
"I'm your friend and coworker too, remember?"
"You mean boss?" I corrected him. "People will talk if you keep hanging out with me."
"You think I care?" He rolled his eyes. "And if someone comes and tell you something." He fumed. "I will work on that."
"You don't need to work on anything about that. I will handle that on my own." I said confidently. "I'm all grown up."
He smiled, a proud smile? "I'll be here for you and I promise this time I'm going to keep my words."
"Don't give me empty promises." I whispered.
Before he could have said anything else. Kingsley came back with his drink and card.
"So what were you guys talking about?" Ian asked and just like that his mood went back to being the bossy and arrogant boss that he is.
