Chapter 15

I stared at the blinding light, like the idiot I was. Something told me to move, but I just stayed rooted to the ground, shocked. I wanted to move, I really do. I tried lifting my leg, but to no avail. I opened my mouth to scream, but nothing came out.

Just as the light neared me, I was pushed to the pathway, away from the speeding car that had just passed. What...?

I felt something heavy on top of me, and looked up. There laid Matt, right on top of me. He was shaking, eyes closed and breaths coming out in pants. Finally, he opened his eyes and glared at me. But among the anger that filled his eyes was pure worry.

''What the hell were you thinking?!'' he asked, voice filled with anger and worry. ''You just ran out without telling anyone, and you could have been killed!''

I didn't realise that tears were still streaming down my face, until Matt wiped it with a thumb.

''Hey,'' he consoled, his voice becoming soft as he helped me up. ''What's wrong?''

''I-it's M-Mike...he doesn't w-want to b-be friends with me anym-more,'' I sobbed into his chest.

He cradled my head and rubbed my back soothingly. ''It's okay...I'm sure he's fine. He doesn't take arguments seriously, remember? He'll be his normal goofy self before you know it.''

''I hope you right...'' I mumbled.

''I'm always right,'' he joked, chuckling to himself. Then, his face changed to that of worry. ''You had me scared, you know? I thought I wasn't going to make it to you on time. I can't lose you.''

I smiled sadly at him. ''You won't,'' I promised, wrapping my arms around his torso. ''I'm sorry I worried you.''

''It's okay, pizza sauce, as long as you're okay.''

I laughed. ''Pizza sauce?''

''Yeah, when you blush the colour on your face is like the red pizza sauce.''

''Don't ever call me that,'' I said, laughing. ''Or I'd have to call you cute little bunny.''

''No you don't!'' he exclaimed, tickling my sides.

I laughed, feeling better, and managed to escape from his grasp. Without wasting any time, I ran back towards my house, Matt trailing behind. I was laughing so much that I couldn't run properly.

As I ran across the front porch, something - or rather someone - fell on top of me, making me fall to the soft grass.

''You can't get away from me,'' Matt whispered into my ears, making me shiver.

He then proceeded to continue tickling me as I rolled over, laughing. After much persuasion, he finally stopped and we just stared at each other. We heard someone clearing his throat and our heads turned towards the front door, where Dad and the rest of my friends were standing, grinning like maniacs.

Colour crept up to my cheeks as I hastily got up with the help of Matt.

''I hope we weren't intruding anything,'' Dad said as I went back into the house.

I didn't reply but went straight to the dining table.

''If you want to make fun of me, do it while we're eating,'' I huffed, crossing my arms. I probably looked like a child right now.

''You're such a child,'' Matt chuckled, taking the seat next to mine.

The rest laughed and filled in the remaining seats while Dad went to the kitchen.
