Chapter 17
Dinner was going well after Matt broke the silence by asking about college. Honestly, I still had no idea what I would do in my life when I grow up. A writer? A teacher? A doctor?
I shrugged at his answer. ''Honestly? I don't know. Maybe I'll go to Yale or something. I'm really not sure, and don't even get me started on what I'm planning to be when I grow up.''
''Come on, it can't be that hard to choose a career,'' Matt said. ''Maybe you could be a writer; you wrote really well in your first assignment. It's like you're meant to write.''
I blush slightly at his compliment. I have been blushing awfully a lot these days, and much to my dismay. Matt's the only one to blame, but not that it was a bad thing, though.
''Really?'' I asked, thinking it through. ''Maybe I could consider it...''
''Yeah,'' Matt replied, smiling. ''And I'll make sure I would be the first one to read the first book you wrote,'' he winked.
What did he mean by he would be the first one to read my book if I ever wrote one? Writing a book was definitely not going to happen anytime soon, but maybe in the future. Does that mean he wants to be with me till we grow older? Get married to him, have kids and raise a family? I blush at the thought of having kids, and what we have to do for us to have them. So far we have only gone as far as kissing passionately.
Ugh, stupid thoughts running through my head!
I looked down at my plate that was still filled with some rice. I absentmindedly pushed the grains around on the plate with my spoon.
''Yeah,'' I finally murmured. ''You'll definitely be the first person I'll show it to.''
''Then what about me?'' Dad chimed in, and I looked up to see him placing a hand across his chest where the heart is as he feigned hurt. ''I'm your father, shouldn't I be the first one to read it?''
''Dad,'' I replied giving him a flat look, ''I bet when my book - if there's ever going to be one - is ready, you'll be old, say about...sixty years? Would you still read them?''
Matt chuckled, probably amused at the fact of Dad being old.
''What?'' Dad asked incredulously. ''Of course, I'll read them. Plus, I'm not that old now - only 42 years old. It doesn't take ten years or so to finish a book.''
''That's what she said,'' Matt muttered under his breath, and I shot him a look at the inappropriate sentence. ''What, I said that out loud?'' I stared at him blankly. ''I'll take that as a yes,'' he mumbled.
I shook my head, my lips twitching as he looked down, looking like a five year old kid who was scolded for being naughty.
''You know,'' Dad mused out of the blue,''before you came to our lives, Danielle, Matt is always moody. He's like Grumpy from Carebears.''
Matt raised an eyebrow at him. ''You're relating me to a Carebear, seriously? And you know their names? Anyways, I can't see myself as a Carebear,'' he said, eyes sparkling with amusement.
My mind drifted to the show that I used to watch when I was younger, and before Amanda, my 'younger sister', was born. I remembered how I used to run to the television whenever the time came for each episode to start. It's quality wasn't that good at the time, and I saw from a shop or somewhere that it was remade and better quality.
''Anyway,'' Dad continued speaking, breaking me out of my reverie ,''you don't know how glad we are to have you in our lives. I never would have thought I would find my long lost daughter, or that all it takes is a girl like you to turn Mad Matt here into the complete opposite.''
