Listen to : leave a light on by Tom WalkerThat night as I drove home with Malachi on my passenger's seat I could not help wondering if Kyle would be home. I was desperate to apologize to him and be candid about why I had kissed his brother instead of him. So many thoughts were running through my mind that I almost raced past a red robot and Malachi had to shout at me telling me to stop. We both jolted forward with so much force when I hit the brakes but I felt more embarrass than pain for being so consumed in my thoughts. I also felt a bit guilty for not speaking to someone I had not seen in years. I drove in a different direction from his house to Burger King so that we could talk . He seemed a bit surprised but he never asked me why. When we got there I got out of the car but he did not even attempt to move . I open his door
" Can you get out of the car? "
" Why? Why are we even here? "
" Cause we need to talk. "
" Did you ask me if I wanted to come here? "
"No, but this was your favorite place in seventh grade. "
He raised an eyebrow and I got the point and just mouthed an oh . We had grown up and it was obvious being away had changed him.
" Fine let me take you home. "
" This was not my favorite place, give me the keys. "
" What? "
" Just give me the keys Vee. "
" Nobody calls me that anymore, it's Ron or Ronnie. "
" That's a bit too masculine for you. "
" Seriously. "
" I'm joking, it's fine I will call you Ron. This also means that Jenny is now Jen right. "
I slam the keys onto his hand without answering an old feeling of always being defeated coming back. He gets out and let me seat on the passenger seat before closing my door. I wait for him to come in the car whilst doing my seat belt and the moment he entered it started,
" For a moment there I was beginning to think you had become such a gentleman "
" What if I have. A lot has changed sweetheart . "
I glare at him for using the silly names but he seems unmoved. He simply starts driving without his seatbelt on. I point at him and he answers before I ask
" I'm not putting on a seatbelt, get comfortable. "
I just sink back into my seat and stare at the screen of my phone wondering if I should call Kyle or not but then realising that if he heard his brother talk in the background it would be over before it began . I switch off my phone only to find Malachi staring and me.
" What ? "
" Nothing, do you think I should dye my hair? "
" No, why? "
" You seemed to have had a hard time telling the difference between me and your boyfriend. "
