After that nightmare the other day, I'd been on edge, half expecting Logan to show up any minute. I hated feeling paranoid, but the dream was still fresh in my mind, and the last thing I wanted was to face him before I was ready.
I wandered into the kitchen, hoping for something to distract me. Opening the fridge, I scanned the shelves, but nothing caught my eye. I sighed, disappointed, and closed the door.
"Sapphire, I got pizza!" Adonis's voice echoed from the living room.
My heart lifted at the sound. I hurried out of the kitchen, my face lighting up when I saw him with a box in hand. "You're back! I missed you," I said, wrapping my arms around him before turning my attention to the pizza. I flipped open the box, and my mouth watered at the sight of my favorite topping.
"Let me go get the ice cream," I mumbled, already halfway to the kitchen.
Adonis groaned behind me. "Ice cream? On pizza? You're a weirdo," he laughed, and I swatted his arm on my way out.
"It's not weird!" I protested, grabbing the tub from the freezer. When I returned, he was still shaking his head at me.
I shrugged. "So, how was work today? Was Logan hard on you?"
Adonis sank into the couch and shook his head. "Not really, but he was looking for you. Dude looked like hell—like he hadn't slept in days."
I froze mid-step, my body tensing. "What?" I asked, and when he gave me a confused look, I danced in place. "Gotta pee!" I dashed to the bathroom and slammed the door shut. While sitting there, I couldn't stop thinking about what Adonis had just said.
When I came back, I tried to act casual. "So... Logan missed me?" I asked hesitantly, sitting down with my pizza and ice cream concoction.
Adonis grimaced at my choice of toppings again, but he answered, "I guess so. He even asked me if I'd seen you. Gave me the death stare when I reminded him he told me not to talk to you."
I laughed, but it felt hollow. Logan had missed me? The thought shouldn't have bothered me, but it did. "I don't care," I mumbled, taking another bite of my pizza. Adonis shot me a look, but I just grinned back at him.
He changed the subject. "What do you do all day when I'm at work?"
I shrugged. "Not much. Just wait for you to get back."
His eyebrow shot up. "Really? You need to get out more. Maybe hang out with my friend's girlfriend. She's pregnant too."
I nodded, but my mind was elsewhere. "Oh! Can I borrow your phone? I want to call Sara."
He handed it to me, and I dialed the familiar number. "Mom, it's me," I whispered when she picked up.
"Sapphire, sweetheart! I miss you so much."
"I miss you too," I said, feeling a wave of emotion. "How are you?"
"I'm fine, dear. How are the babies?"
"They're doing well. Adonis and I are going to the doctor tomorrow," I replied, a small smile on my face.
"That's wonderful, honey. Call me after, okay?"
"I will," I promised, hanging up. I handed Adonis back the phone with a pout.
"What's wrong?" he asked gently.
"I miss her cooking," I said with a sigh.
He chuckled. "I can bring you some food from work if you want."
My face lit up, and I hugged him tight. "You're the best!"
"I know," he said smugly, pulling back. "Now, finish your pizza, take a bath, and get some rest. We've got a big day tomorrow."
