Haydee's Uncle Kol had dropped off her luggage in her room and she started to unpack. It wasn't much different from the room in New Orleans or Los Angeles. It might have been a bit bigger. The walls were stark white and Haydee had already decided what to paint them. All black with one side accented with wallpaper. Haydee filled her dresser then started hanging up the more expensive things that she knew the small town people couldn't appreciate. She put on music and began to clean up. As she finished up there was a knock on the door. It was hard to hear it over the construction sounds and music so Haydee didn't hear until it became a banging. She walked over quickly.
"Thought I'd take you and Davina into town for a bite to eat then head to the store," Kol told her. Haydee nodded. The sounds were giving her a headache.
"Anything to escape all this noise," she said and grabbed her bag.
They took her convertible and Haydee thought it was storybook perfect. There were groups of teenagers at various stages in front of the grill. Haydee got out of the car and watched her Uncle drape his arm around Davina and kiss her cheek. She rolled her eyes and put on her sunglasses. The trio walked into the grill and Haydee could hear the sounds of a couple arguing. She looked to her right to see a tall caramel-colored muscular male in a letterman's jacket arguing with a brunette with curly hair. Not like her coils but beach waves. "I don't know why you're still angry about this," the girl said and leaned in closer, caressing his arm.
"You wouldn't," he replied as he snatched his arm away and walked off. His brown eyes met Haydee's and her cheeks flushed. She looked away and back at Kol and Davina who was walking to a table.
"How small town is this?" Davina said, looking at the menu and around at the people.
"I know. I hate it," Haydee said and did the same, taking in everything around them, "I can't do this for a year."
"Everything will be fine," Davina patted Haydee's hand gently, "All the things I've heard that's happened here, it doesn't feel like a supernatural battleground."
"You'd be surprised," Kol said before a young woman came to take their order.
They finished at the grill then went to get groceries for the rest of the house. When they returned, the house was almost completed. The construction crews were working 24/7. The Mikaelson family sat down a few hours later to dinner in the finished dining room. Haydee had to admit it didn't feel that different from New Orleans or Los Angeles. Just a family in a home.
Three days later, Haydee woke up early for the first day of school. She had video called Auntie Bex to go over her outfit and double-checked it with Davina. They both agreed it was the perfect blend of witchy casual. Haydee put on a little bit of makeup including dark red matte lipstick. Even without heightened senses, she smelled the french toast and bacon coming from downstairs. She wanted to avoid a lecture from her parents about school safety but the food almost seemed worth it. Haydee walked downstairs, her heeled boots clicking on the hardwoods. Finn was already sitting at the table with Kriss, Kol, and Davina. Freya was finishing up cutting fruit and putting it on a plate.
"We thought you'd never come down," Kriss said.
"Well I assumed the longer I waited, the less time you would have to lecture me," Haydee said and sat down to begin filling her plate.
"I'm going to need you to watch the tone," Kriss told her and it took everything Haydee had to not roll her eyes. She needed to focus all her energy on the anxiety of her first day, not a fight, "I know you know how to control your magic. I trust you. I want you to also watch your surroundings."
