Chapter 19

While Haydee was at school, Kriss spent the day worrying. She didn't even know why they agreed to let her go in the first place. The entire day, Finn tried to give her massages and feed her tons of Bourbon. After that didn't work, Kriss was glad the school day was almost over and she'd be home soon. Until then, she went for a walk on the back of the property near the forest.

She'd been walking for an hour when the sky started to darken. Then she heard it. It didn't sound like much at first but then the louder scream echoed through the trees. Kriss felt her heart dropped and hoped Finn felt it too. She chased the sound, not knowing what she would be faced with. There was so much going on in her head that she could hardly take notice of the witches running. Instead, she headed towards a clearing. Except this wasn't your normal clearing. The trees had been flattened in a two-mile radius. At the center of the destruction was a sobbing Haydee. Not too far from her, was a crushed body but Kriss ignored it when Haydee screamed. "Help! Please!" Kriss smelled the blood and knew it wasn't her daughter's.

"Haydee!" Kriss shouted and ran over to her. She got on her knees and tried to pull the dead body from her daughter's clutches.

"No! This is all my fault. They killed her because of me," Haydee had tears pouring down her face and swollen eyes.

"If you don't calm down, I'll have to put you to sleep. I need you to let her go. We have to get you safe," Kriss said quickly and pulled Haydee away. She picked her up under her knees and began to carry her back towards the house. They ran into Finn along the way. "There's a dead teenager in the middle. We need to bury her." He nodded and began to run off.

"Transition," Kriss heard Haydee whisper.

"Finn!" Kriss shouted and she heard him come back, "Take the girl to the house. She might be in transition." He nodded again and Kriss finished the trip. She ignored everyone as she raced Haydee into their room and to the bathroom.

The first thing she had to do was get rid of all the bloody clothes. Kriss began to strip the shaking Haydee after turning on the bath and letting it fill. "You need to get in," she whispered to her daughter and Haydee did then flinched because of the temperature change. Haydee just sits there in the water with her knees pulled into her chest. "You have to wash away the blood. The drier it gets the harder it will be. Trust me, I know." Haydee shook her head up and down slowly and began to shakily clean herself. When she found it to be too much, she handed to towel to Kriss.

Kriss washed the blood from her and Haydee cried. "I know it's hard. No one is mad at you. We just don't want anything to happen to you. I was so worried when I heard your scream." They finished in silence and Kriss gave Haydee a towel. Haydee walked up to leave and Kriss cleaned up the bloody bath and clothes.

"I'm sorry, Mom," she said softly then left the room.

Haydee went to her room and Kriss followed her. "I know that you're sorry. But now there is a war to fight. And there has been the first casualty." Haydee looked up in her t-shirt and shorts. Her eyes welled with tears again.

"Vera is dead? Really dead?"

"We don't know yet. She still has a couple hours to wake up in transition. But vampirism is a death too. Rebirth through it. And followed by death because of it." Kriss said and Haydee nodded. Kriss still didn't want to mention the witch she saw flattened into the ground. She decided it was a secret she would take with her to the grave. Something her child would never know about herself.

Kriss rushed downstairs where Finn, Freya, Kol, and Davina were in the library. Vera's limp body was on the couch either dead or preparing to wake. "So the barrier is down. They forced Haydee to Siphon it all." The proof of the magic was the fact that a storm was still in the air. Thunder cracked and lightning illuminated the house.
