Dean- 23
Sam-19 (mentioned)
Meredith- 13

Sam had just left for college. Everyone was having trouble adjusting, especially Meredith. She knew her father was struggling too, but he channeled his pain into anger. Anything would set him off and he would disappear into the night drinking his sorrows away. She was used to it though, that was just what John Winchester did.

Dean on the other hand had to hide his emotions. Even though he was devastated by the absence of his brother, he didn't want to show his father any sign of weakness. He had to be the good soldier like his father trained him to be.

It wasn't just for his father though. It was also for Meredith. He wanted to keep a brave face for her. Reassure her that even with Sam gone that everything would be okay. Even though he knew it wouldn't be.

Meredith tried to be like Dean. She wanted to bury her feelings inside a hole and forget they  were there. But she couldn't. It was too hard. Even though it was a secret, Sam had talked to Meredith about his dream of college for quite some time. She just didn't realize he would actually go through with it. He was her only source of normal. He was her best friend.

Meredith began to stir awake from her restless slumber. They were on a vamp case in Utah. More like her father and brother were on a case. Although she did do research, it just didn't feel quite the same.

Her father trained her everyday. Teaching her everything a person would need to know about hunting. Meredith thought she was ready. In fact, she knew she was ready. But John Winchester was just to stubborn.

She cracked on eye open and groaned.

"Morning sunshine" Dean called from the small table in the corner of the room.

The only response he got was a grumble and a pillow thrown at his head. He smirked and pored himself a cup of coffee.

"Come on lil sis daylights burning" he chuckled at her laziness. She rubbed her eyes and glanced at the clock.

7:24. Daylight my ass she thought.

She yawned and got up. "Where's dad?" She asked looking into the donut box Dean had picked up.

"He's working the case himself this time. One man job I guess" he said taking a sip of his coffee.

"Oh"

After a few minutes of building up the courage she finally asked dean the million dollar question.

"Have you heard from Sam?" She asked avoiding eye contact. She knew the answer. Dean didn't know it but she knew he had been secretly going off to try and get ahold of Sam. It always went to voicemail. She didn't know why he never answered but she figured it was just to hard for him.

One night when Meredith couldn't sleep, she took her phone and snuck out. Honestly she didn't think she could do it. Nothing could get past her father. So when she did she couldn't help but feel proud of herself.

Let's just say the feeling didn't last long. Sam had never answered. Even though she knew Sam was probably ignoring them, she just blamed it on the fact that it was in the middle of the night. However, sneaking back into the room though was not as triumphant. She was met with a worried brother and a very angry father. She had no intentions of sneaking out again after that.
