I’ll tell you this, it isn’t very comfortable standing in an elevator with a guy who’s a good ten inches taller than you especially if he’s looking at you as if he’s imagining you funeral, with he himself isn’t attending.
Evelyn seemed to be analysing every little feature on my face, I slowly turned my head the other way but still strangely felt his eyes on my head. An elevator ride had never felt so long before. Evelyn seemed to still be pretty bitten of my assumptions of his job, but I would have to keep guessing if he didn’t tell me himself.
I filled my cheeks with air, a habit, something I do when I got frustrated and uncomfortable. Don’t even ask me why I do it, I don’t know myself. Exiting the elevator I heard Evelyn mutter something which sounded suspiciously like ‘chipmunk,’
“I do not look like a chip-”
“You’re small enough.” Evelyn reasoned quietly and without a word led me into the driver’s car.
“Take her straight home.” He demanded shoving me down on the seat and reaching out for the seatbelt as if I didn’t have the ability to do so myself.
“I can buckle myself in.” I grumbled trying to lean back into the leather seats so I would make as little physical contact as possible. Evelyn ignored me. He probably though I would try and scuttle out of the other end of the door. He pulled back and observed me for a bit, I turned my face to stare grumpily out of the window, I had been so close to finding out what he worked as!
So clooose!
Evelyn took hold of my chin and turned me to face him staring me in the eye. “Don’t try anything, you hear?” I nodded quickly trying to lean away from his hands, it didn’t work. “I mean it Hazel.” For a fraction of a second his eyes flickered down, perhaps at my nose. Maybe I had a pimple? I’ll never know. He leaned back and muttered a few words to the driver, words like ‘deceiving face’ and ‘manipulative mind’ and ‘don’t you dare’, and such flattering words to describe such an innocent person. I scowled at the compliments.
The car started, it had an almost non existence sound just a purr of the engines I glanced out of the window watching the tall skyscraper of a building vanishing as we rounded a corner, I could still look up and see it though, if I craned my neck enough.
Five minutes passed in which I became gloomier and gloomier. It wasn’t fair, my mind screamed at me. You have to do something! I sighed and stared forwards for a bit glancing around the car. There were a few buttns here and there, not like the normal every day car. I pressed on of the buttons with the microphone button.
“Yes ma’am?” I blinked and glanced around. It was the driver.
“Could we stop?” I whined, a silence from the front.
“Ma’am I’ve been told to take you straight home-”
“I really really really need the toilet.” I begged hopping up and down in the seat. “I really really can’t hold it in.” I added quickly catching his doubtful look. “You know what, rest in peace car, your leather seats will no longer be spotless-” My dramatic monologue came a swift halt and the driver stopped. I guess he loved the car too much to see it ruined.
“I’ll take you to the ladies bathrooms.” He muttered, I nodded and quickly sent him a charming smile which he returned with a sigh. The driver strode towards the mall muttering at me to come with him. He looked like the typical driver, I wondered if Evelyn asked the applicants to send in pictures and the one who had sunglasses in his picture would get the job.
The driver beckoned me to go in whilst he stood near the girls toilets exits as if he were guarding the freaking place. I didn’t know how I would get out, and as I stood there in m little cubicle I wondered what I was planning to do in the first place once I had gotten out, I mean it’s not like could go back.
