I stared at him blankly for a bit trying to ignore the sharp stinging on my arm.
“Right... I’ll go with that.” I nodded slowly and bit my lips. “Look, I just got into a fight...” My voice trailed off after a bit realising that this guy was obviously not buying any of my ‘oh so believable story’. Evelyn just stared at me for a while before striding over to the cupboard pulling out a first aid kit whilst I wondered if I could still run for it to the bathroom and deal with this on my own. That didn’t seem to be one of my choices, Evelyn seemed to know I wasn’t too keen on staying here and letting him deal with this, he shot me a look from the corner of his eyes. It seemed he was trying to control himself right now, it was never good when that happened.
He walked back quietly but a little faster when he saw the red path starting to form on my sleeve. Heck I knew it was bad but is just looked ridiculous, I mean I’m pretty sure that it was only a scratch before. Evelyn pulled me down onto the sofa and took my arm.
“Look I know how to clean-”
“Quiet Hazel.” Well someone was in a bad mood... Evelyn placed a cushion on his lap and placed by arm on top of it rolling up the sleeves surprisingly gently, after examining the cut a little which he didn’t seem to be able to do because of the blood he started dabbing at the cut, he seemed pretty experienced at this as well.
“Tell me.” He demanded, eyes flashing partly hidden by his fringe. God, he had long eye lashes, how very unfair, he seemed to sense that he was being stared at and his eye flickered up to me mine. His face was set and his hand clutching my wrist a little too tight, Evelyn took in a controlled breath and stared at my arm. “Tell me what happened.”
He’s dangerous...
I didn’t know what to believe anymore. My eyes flickered back to the window avoiding his gaze. The silence was interrupted by yell of pain, (and horror) as I felt some liquid come in contact with me hand seeping through my wound. Absent mindedly I tried to pull my arm away but Evelyn’s grip on my wrist only tightened. My face went bright red and I bit down hard on my lips so not to let out another wail of despair.
“You don’t trust me.” Evelyn said simply, his voice lower than usual, it almost came in a whisper. Great, what was I supposed to do? Lie? He’d be able to catch my lie out anyway o there wasn’t much point was there? Questions questions...
“Well... do you blame me for not trusting you?” I managed to ask in my agonising state, (OK maybe not agonising but close enough). “You haven’t told me anything, and I mean anything about yourself, your freaking secretary knows more than me.” I snapped, this was responded to with a silence by Evelyn.
“You’re going to tell me Hazel.” He said finally leaning forward, taking advantage of his height making me feel short. I sank back a little. “Because if you don’t...” He gritted his teeth, Evelyn was close enough for me to be able to feel the his breath on my face, a slight mint coffee smell. I realised he had been talking and I’d apparently just ignored what he had been saying.
“What?” I asked blankly, Evelyn blinked and leaned back rubbing his temple slowly probably wondering how he’d gotten stuck with me. Hah. I was breaking him down. “Look, let’s make a deal, you tell me your job and I tell you what’s been happening- happened.”
Too late, it was small mistakes like this that caught me out, saying what had been ‘happening’ instead of what had happened, see there was a great difference. By saying what had been happening I had now revealed that this was not the first strange incident in the past few days at the least.
