“I thought you had work.” I said after a long silence, He was staring out of the window and my heart was dying in my feet. Dangerous? How?
“I decided to give myself a holiday” Evelyn said finally, he glanced at me and stared for a couple of seconds “Are you....alright?” he asked slowly
I nodded quickly, too quickly and his eyes flickered to the paper in my pocket. He took two drinks from a little cooler and gave one to me. Yes, the car had freaking drinks in them. I could live here.
After a minute of struggling to open the can, and wondering what the chances were that this drink was poisoned, then deciding that I was thirsty anyway, Evelyn took my drink and opened it in a second. Giving it back to me. I stared at him, as if to tell him with my eyes that I had done most of the hard work in opening the bottle, he rolled his eyes skywards.
“I was thinking” he said finally “Of spending some time with you”
I choked- very gracefully may I say- on my drink, and nearly died on it. Evelyn looked annoyed at the fact that I was so shocked at his comment.
“Don’t Evelyn” I spluttered “My fragile heart cannot take so many surprises in one day”
He gave a small amused laugh, and turned to him sharply only to find him staring at me in his usual monotone face. Ah, the Evelyn laugh, many have heard of it, but only some have witnessed it, it is like a unicorn, or the under the bed monster, on e cannot say whether it actually exists. Though of course I believe in the under the bed monster and a unicorn must exist if someone like him walks this very earth.
And then he really did laugh. I swear on it- and it took me a second of horror to realize I had spoken out loud. He raised his eyebrow when he finally finished, staring at my monotone face with an amused expression.
“You don’t really believe in the under the bed monster do you, sweetheart?”
I cursed under my breath.
The car stopped in front of the hotel I had named home. We walked up the stairs in silence and Evelyn opened the door, allowing me to walk in.
“Why the sudden change of heart?” I muttered as I walked past. He didn’t reply instead locking the door behind him. He walked over the window and opened it.
“So what exactly do you mean...what are you going to do exactly” I said, making myself comfortable on the sofa. He sat next to me which was another shock I could not take.
“To get to know each other” He said bluntly “properly, since we are going to live together for the rest of our miserable lives”
I gave him a strange look.
“Aren’t you going to take your jacket off?” Evelyn asked after a minute, he looked awkward, as if saying this sentence was hard to say.
I shrugged in reply.
“I understand I’ve been harsh to you Hazel” Evelyn said suddenly.
Ok, this was far too much for the beating pump in my chest.
“I have my reasons” Evelyn said quietly “maybe- maybe one day I’ll tell you...”
“-what you work as” I finished
He gave a great sigh and stared at me, forcing me to stare back. “Honestly Hazel, I have my reasons” he repeated “Its-“ he frowned “It’s complicated” he muttered.
He’s dangerous
The note’s words echoed in my head and I looked away quickly. Evelyn searched my face.
