Katya's POV
"Where are you going Katya?"
"Just out mom."
"Going to see someone?"
"Mom, I'm just going out."
"Uh huh."
"If you must know, I'm going to see Trixie."
"Katya, I've been meaning to ask you something." Oh God here we go. "What is going on between you two?"
"Nothing. We are friends."
"You told us that last time and that wasn't the truth."
"We are friends mom and we were two years ago also."
"Katya, I just worry about you."
"What is there to worry about?"
"You left for two years Katya. We didn't even know where you had gone really. We didn't get a phone call or anything from you for a while. I don't want that to happen again. She.. isn't good for you."
"Mom, how could you say that?"
"Because it's the true."
"You don't know Trixie."
"I know that she hurt you."
"Mom, she didn't owe me anything. Friends hurt each other all the time."
"To the point where they get on a plane and just up and leave? I don't think so." My mom took a deep breathe as she took my hand. "Katya, you are my baby. I want you to be happy okay? Maybe you should move on, go on a date to forget about those feelings for her.." I pulled away from my mom and walked to the door.
"I'm not stuck on her or anything mom. We're friends, end of story okay?"
"Whatever you say Katya. If you want to leave, make sure to at least write a letter before leaving this time." My mom turned her back and walked up the stairs. I refused to go after her. I didn't want to. I wasn't stuck on Trixie. I knew that there wasn't going to be anything between us. I could date if I wanted to, I knew I could.
When I pulled up to Trixie's house, she was waiting outside. I got out of the car and walked inside the gate. "Hey."
"Hi Katya. Are you okay?"
"Can we go somewhere?"
"Where?"
"Shit, I don't know." I looked down at my feet. I kicked a rock around with the tip of my boot. I could feel Trixie's eyes on me.
"Um, how about a walk?"
"Sounds cool."
"Good." Trixie stood up from the step and walked past me, outside the gate. I walked beside Trixie, not really talking much. I was a bit angry. Was my mom right? Was I really stuck on Trixie? "Katya? Earth to Katya?"
"Huh? Yeah?"
"I asked how your day was?"
"Oh it was alright."
"Katya, what's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"You're lying to me." I didn't say anything to Trixie. I kept walking, counting my steps. Trixie grabbed my arm and stopped me. "What is wrong?"
"Nothing is wrong Trix. I'm just thinking."
"About what? You aren't your usual self, I'm worried." I made the mistake of looking in Trixie's eyes. My walls fell at my feet as I stared back at Trixie.
"My mom told me that you aren't good for me."
"What?" I could tell that Trixie was a bit taken back at hearing what my mother said. "W..why?"
"She thinks I'm stuck on you. She blames you for me leaving. I told her that none of that was true."
"But it is."
"How?"
"Katya, you left because of me. I know that, okay? Everyone in our friend group knows it too. You don't have to protect me from the truth. Tell your mom I said that I'm sorry."
"Trixie, I don't want you to be sorry."
"We can't always get what we want. We both know that very well don't we?"
"I guess." Trixie wrapped her arm around mine as we stared to walk again. The dark blue night sky was lit up with the millions of stars. The cool breeze blew through my hair, sending chills down my neck.
"Katya?"
"Hmm?"
"You said that the night is for saying things we can't tomorrow right?"
"Yes."
"Well, can I say something then?"
"Sure."
"I wish I could go back to that night, I wish I could redo it all."
"Why?"
"I want to change the way things happen between us. I mean, we didn't have to end up together but I would have preferred if you stayed. Maybe we could be in a different place if that night played out better."
"We both rushed without thinking. Acted without thinking how the other person would feel."
"I've thought of a million different ways to apologize but none of them ever seem good enough."
"You don't have anything to apologize for. Like I said before, we are building our friendship now. We live and learn from our mistakes."
"Thank you Katya."
"For what?"
"Coming back." I smiled as I held Trixie's hand. "Oh, I wanted to invite you to watch me preform."
"When?"
"This Sunday. I am singing and playing my guitar."
"I would love to come."
"Really?"
"Hell yeah."
"Okay, good." I could hear the excitement in Trixie's voice. We had such a long way to go.
