She turned lazily from one side of the bed to another not wanting to get up anytime soon, but the husky and deep voice owned by her brother yelled her name like it was a word he hated so much.
She slowly opened her sleepy eyes with a big frown on her face.
"What does he want?!" she rolled out of her bed landing with a big thump on the ceramic floor.
After a few rubs on her arm, she sledges on her slippers and went downstairs to answer her brother who had just interrupted her from taking a sip from the glass of drink in her dream.
"Why were you calling me?" she stretched with the frown still plastered on her face.
"Umma and abba just left for an event, Umma told me to inform you to do the laundry and get some groceries from the market," he handed a paper to her but she didn't collect it because she had resumed her sleep on the couch.
With a smacking spank placed at the back of her neck, she sat up abruptly.
"Do you always have to be so mean?" she rubbed the back of her neck which felt hot.
"Take," he still held out the paper and she snatched it without hesitation. "The money is over there." he pointed at the glass centre table in the middle of the sitting room. " I'll be out with some of my friends, so you better be done with your chores before I get back."He pulled his sneakers from the side of the couch.
Hauwa rolled her eyes.
"What about Safiya?" the sleep had started to vanish from her eyes.
He was silent for a while before saying "Check the kitchen." and then exited the house with his phone in hand.
"Finally!" she muttered once Amir shut the front door.
She had the entire house to herself!
She did a little happy dance before making her way to the kitchen.
The first thing that met her nostrils once she swung the kitchen door open was a sharp burning smell.
Thick dark smoke made its way to every corner of the kitchen making it hard for anything to be seen.
But through the smoke, Hauwa managed to see Safiya using an apron to direct the smoke from the opened window.
Hauwa held her hands over her nose and made her way to her mischievous little sister.
"What are you doing?!!" she snapped while opening the back door allowing most of the smoke that was trapped in the kitchen to escape into the atmosphere.
The kitchen became a little bit clear and less suffocating.
"I was baking."Safiya pointed to a charcoal-black substance on the counter.
"And who gave you permission?"Hauwa had her hands akimbo while dashing Safiya a deadly glare.
"Ya Amir," she replied, wearing her supposed innocent face.
Safiya was nothing close to innocent. Her dark brown eyes were the master of hypnotism, but they didn't work on Hauwa most of the time.
Safiya did things you would never expect twelve years old to do.
"That boy, "Hauwa muttered under her breath as she pulled her little sister out of the kitchen. "Stay here and don't move, "Hauwa walked to the kitchen before turning back to face Safiya again. "Not even an inch." she held out her index finger and narrowed her eyes.
She still had her innocent face on and just nodded.
Hauwa vanished back into the kitchen leaving Safiya standing there.
