Chapter 12
It’s What Is In The Dark
Jessica and Brittney’s Flat
***Jessica’s POV***
{Later That Night}
“Whisper, whisper in your ear,
The doors are opened for your fears
Close your eyes but listen close,
I’ll get you before the roast.”
Voices were everywhere as I walked around the open plain. The only sign of any life was a grand oak tree a few yards away from where I was. With a sense of uneasiness I began running towards the tree, something drew me towards it, but what?
Out of nowhere a rabbit hopped out of a small hole near the tree making me jump back in surprise. I paid no attention to it, slightly dying at how cute it was but having to dismiss the thought when I remembered where I was. I was in nowhere, or somewhere, I just didn’t know where. Confusing…
“Whisper, whisper in your,
The doors are opened for your fears
Closer your eyes but listen close,
I’ll get you before the roast.”
Okay… that’s not creepy at all; I darkly chuckled at my own humor. Trying to ignore as the rhyme played once more, then twice, I walked around the tree, feeling the bark on my hands.
It felt soft almost, not the hard, grainy feel one would expect. Something wasn’t right here.
“What gave you that idea?” An eerie voice said from behind me causing me to stop in my tracks. Slowly, but carefully, I turned around, almost afraid of what I would see behind me.
“Hello?” I whispered my breath becoming visible as the temperature dropped drastically. Everything around me began turning grey; the leaves on the trees began changing colors and crumbling to the ground, the yellow/golden grass fell to the ground in death and the sun set causing a full yellow moon to appear in its place.
“Shit…”
“What’s the matter Jessica? Hasn’t anyone ever told you not to be afraid of the dark?” I felt breathless as the voice continued, a cold breath on the nape of my neck paralyzing me in fear. The Thing let out a dark evil chuckle causing a shiver to rip through my body. “It’s what is in the dark you should be afraid of…”
When the sudden gust of wind picked up a foul smell crossed my nose making me gag in disgust. Carefully, as if by the slightest movement would scare the Thing away, I turned around to face the open field behind me. Feeling faint immediately at what I saw.
Behind me, drenched in blood and a black cloak stood the Thing, it wasn’t the sight of him that set me in overdrive, it was the bronze of his eyes and the blood that ran over his body.
With wide eyes I looked behind him at the pile of bodies, every face a certain memory was brought forth in my brain. What caught my attention wasn’t the evil chuckle the Thing let out, no, what caught me eyes was the lifeless blue eyes of my favorite Irish lad peeking through his cloak.
Now was the time to breath, I thought with a breathless sigh.
“Don’t be afraid of the dark,” The voice repeated in my head. “Be afraid of what’s in it.”
