"Thomas, hurry or you'll be late for school! Again!" I sigh and slide on a dark blue v neck, tucking my phone and wallet into my pockets. I run out of my room, slinging my backpack over my shoulder and grabbing my keys as well. "Thomas, don't forget you have to help Ashton and Annie with their homework after school." I stop and see my mom in the kitchen, "Isn't that your job?"
"Your father and I are going to another pack for a meeting so I need you to watch after them."
"Why can't Ashton watch after Annie? I have practice after school, mom." She sighs, "I'll talk to Ash about it. Just get going." I run out the door and jump into my dark blue Jeep Wrangler. I pull away from the house then drive to school. 30 minutes later, I pull into a parking space then jump out of the car, running into the building. I slide into my seat before the bell rings then my Aunt Emily whispers, "Why are you always late, Tom?"
"I'm just getting really bad pains in my back. They're so bad that I can't even move for at least an hour."
"Have you told your mom?" I shake my head then she sighs, "You need to tell her. She might be able to help you, Tommy." I nod then the door creaks open and with it comes the most intoxicating smell; strawberries and oranges. A girl with shoulder length brown wavy hair and big brown eyes looks over the class then focuses on Mr. Hyde. "How can I help you?" The girl hands Hyde a note and he nods, "Alright, class, this is Sapphire Valenzuela and she just transferred from Florida. I expect you guys to treat her like a friend." He points to the seat next to me which is empty and she walks through the aisle to sit down next to me. She looks my way and I smile, "Hey, I'm Thomas Reddings. It's nice to meet you, Sapphire." She nods and shakes my hand, the mate shocks going up my arm. Her eyes widen then she pulls away to look down at her desk. I look over at Emily and whisper, "Its her." Emily smiles then we just continue listening to the lesson; sometimes. My mind was mainly focused on my mate.
Lunchtime
Apparently, I only have first block with Sapphire so hopefully I see her during lunch. I sit down at my table with my friends all around me when Sapphire walks in with her head down but her cheeks looks splotchy, like she's been crying. She sits by herself, keeping her head down, then Emily whispers, "Go." I stand and walk over, sitting in front of her, "Sapphire, are you okay?" She looks up at me then shakes her head.
"What's wrong then? Tell me." She pulls out her phone then types something. What is she doing? Suddenly a robotic voice comes from the phone, "Just some girls are picking on me but I'm alright. Thank you for checking on me."
"Can you not talk?" She shakes her head then I ask, "How long have you not been able to talk?" She types, "16 years."
"You've never been able to talk. Why?" She shakes her head, like she's saying 'Can't tell you.' I sigh then one of the pack sluts walks over to me, "Thomas, why are you hanging out with mute girl? It's not like you're going to get much conversation from her." I growl and whisper to her, "You ever disrespect her again, I will banish you." She bows her head in submission then walks back to her table. Sapphire raises her eyebrow and I shrug, "She was making fun of you. No one makes fun of my friends." She types something, "Woah, who said we were friends?"
"I did."
"Okay, listen up, Mister Friendliness, to be my friend you have to earn my trust. Once you do, then we can be friends but until then you're just another person in the crowd. Have a nice life." She picks up her bag then walks away, leaving me shocked. What in the hell just happened? Emily sits in front of me smiling, "Well, how did it go?"
"I don't know. She said I have to earn her trust before we could be friends. You're a girl, what does that mean?" She glares at me then answers, "It means that she wants to know you aren't looking for a fuck and go. She wants to know that you actually want to be her friend. When you see her, say hi or ask if she needs help. You'll be friends in no time." I nod then say, "Em, she's mute. How am I gonna get to know her better?"
"There are things called pencils, paper and phones. Come on, little nephew, keep up."
"As I recall, I'm older than you Auntie Emily." She sticks her tongue out at me then starts laughing. I laugh too then the bell rings. "I'll see you after school, brat," she calls out. I roll my eyes and turn down the hall. A brown haired girl comes down the hall, head down, not paying attention. She's about to run into Erick, the school's manwhore, when I shout, "Sapphire, watch out!" She looks up but Erick already has his hands on her waist, trying to keep her from falling. I see red and I run over, ripping his hands off of her. "Woah, watch it Tom. I was just helping the new girl from falling on her knees." He chuckles and I punch him in the jaw. He falls to the ground and Sapphire grabs my arm, pulling my away. I let her and she pulls me into the courtyard, sitting me down on a bench. "Are you okay?"
"I'm alright. Are you okay, Saph? Did he hurt you?" She shakes her head and I sigh, "I'm sorry you had to see that. Erick is a slut so just stay away from him, I don't want you getting hurt." She nods but I see a slight pink tint on her cheeks. I stand and she looks up at me, "Come on, let's get you to class. Do you need help with your books?" She shakes her head then slings her backpack over her shoulder and I follow after her, pulling the door open for her. She smiles and I smile back, liking that I actually made her happy. She walks off toward her class and I call out, "See you later, Saph!" She waves then I hear, "Mr. Reddings, why aren't you in class?" Oh, shit.
