Thomas
I sit in the office, waiting for the okay to leave. "Mr. Reddings, we can't get a hold of your parents. Is there anyone else at home that we can contact?"
"I don't understand why you're doing this. I can't leave school, I have practice today since the game is on Friday. Coach will kill me if I miss practice." Emily runs through the door, panting, "What happened?"
"Emily, what are you doing here," I whisper. She glares at me then asks, "Why is my nephew here an not in class? His mother won't be happy he is missing getting an education." One of the ladies speaks up, "He wasn't in class when the bell rang, Ms. Mason. We know you're his aunt but you're still-"
"I wouldn't say I'm a minor. His mother added me on the emergency contact list since I go to the same school as he does. Technically, I can get him out of here."
"What if we don't let you?" Emily smirks, "My brother-in-law will sue you for keeping his son out of class. Trust me, you don't want to go to court with Nikolai Reddings." After 5 minutes of going back and forth, they finally let me go. "Thank Em." She smacks the back of my head, "You knuckle head, that's the third time I had to bail you out this school year. I'm gonna have to tell your mom about this."
"No, Em, this is about Sapphire. I was talking to her and I totally forgot about getting to class. Please, Em, don't tell my mom. She'll kill me!" Em, being the nice auntie she is, nods, "Alright but if this happens one more time, I will be telling your mother." I hug her, "Thanks Auntie Em! You're the best!"
"I know, I know, love you too kid. Now get to class before I do tell your mom." I run down the hall but stop when I hear crying in the girl's bathroom. I knock, "Hey, are you okay in there?" The crying stops then I hear the robotic voice, "I'm alright, Thomas. Go to class."
"Is there anyone in the bathroom right now?"
"No, just me."
"Alright, I'm coming in." I push the door open and she's sitting with her back against the wall, tears sliding down her cheeks. I kneel down in front of her, "Hey, what happened?" She shakes her head as more tears fall out. I open my arms, "Thomas hugs are the best cure for taking away tears. Come on, you know you want one." She wraps her arms around my neck and holds on tight. "My sister felt the way you're feeling once. She's different from the rest of my family so she always felt alone, like no one understood her. She would come home from school and sit in her room and just cry until she fell asleep. One day, I went into her room and told her that she was who she was and she was beautiful. She's unique in her own way, just like you are Saph. So what if you're mute, that's the way you were born and you can't help it. Being mute makes you different and unique and beautiful. You see the world differently than everyone else does and you can enjoy the beauty in things. Don't cry because people make fun of you, laugh because they don't know what it's like to be different." I pull back and wipe away her tears, "You're so beautiful Sapphire in your own way." She smiles then blushes while hugging me again. She pulls back after a while then types, "Thank you Thomas."
"Can we be friends now?" She taps her chin twice then nods. Yes! I smile, "Thank you so much Saph, you have no idea how much this means to me."
