As Lily made her way back to the common room for the party, she found herself in an abandoned classroom. She no longer was in the party spirit. Lily sat on a windowsill and looked down at the grounds. The door opened a minute or two later and someone came in. Lily didn't bother looking over until someone sat next to her. She wiped her eyes with the cuff of her sweater.
"You like him?" Remus asked quietly and Lily looked over at him and smiled weakly.
"It's the worst," she laughed. "I had all last year, the year before. He's different this year though, right? I mean an arse don't get me wrong, but he matured over summer."
"Yeah. Or you just stopped seeing him as the annoying boy that won't stop pestering you or your friend," Remus put an arm around her and Lily put her head on his shoulder.
"Ugh don't remind me of Severus," Lily groaned. "Maybe I don't like him and he's just nice to me so I'm confused," Lily nodded.
"Well I'm nice to you. Would you consider me the same as James?" Remus asked and Lily stayed silent. "You could just tell him. You know he hasn't given up."
"I don't want to ruin our friendship. It's just not the right time," Lily mumbled and Remus sighed.
"Is there ever a right time?" Remus asked and Lily once again chose not to answer. As time went on, Lily and James grew closer. The first snow had finally fallen and everyone was getting ready for Hogsmeade trips and eventually Christmas break. James and Emily had started dating soon after the Quidditch pitch. He had been out training almost every night in the snow and sleet. One afternoon in particular, he came back to the common room drenched in sweat and snow.
"We better be winning if you're training in these conditions," Sirius told James who walked towards the group of them.
"I could really go for some butterbeer," Lily sighed while sitting with the boys and Marlene.
"You know what me too," said James who fell into a chair behind Lily.
"Go get some," Sirius said while playing with his wand.
"Are you down?" James kicked Lily lightly.
"Yeah," Lily looked back and he stood up.
"I'll be back let me go change," James got up and went up to his room. When he came back down, he had on a sweater and sweatpants. His hair was going in every which direction. "C'mon Evans," he held his hand out to help Lily up. "We'll be back guys," James said to them and Remus shot Lily a look that she ignored. Lily followed James out the portrait hole and took Lily to the one eyed witch statue. James looked around to make sure no one was around before taking his wand out.
"Dissendium," he whispered and the hump opened. "After you," James pushed Lily a little bit. Lily quickly crawled in and let out a little yelp not expecting the slide. She landed sprawled on her back and a second later James was on top of her. Lily breathed in and smelled pine and lemongrass. She was glad it was dark as her cheeks turned pink and the smell made her smile.
"Sorry bout that," James got up quickly and lit his wand before helping her up.
They walked in silence for the most part until the path started to curve upwards.
James opened the hatch and hoisted himself into Honeydukes cellar. James reached in and grabbed Lily's arms to pull her out.
They managed to get into The Three Broomsticks with little difficulty and Lily grabbed a booth in the back while James ordered for them.
He came back, drinks in hand, and slid next to Lily. She could feel his body heat as they were so close.
"I haven't talked to you in a while," James looked over at Lily.
"Yeah you've had Quiddich and..." Lily trailed off and took a deep drink of butterbeer. It warmed her soul.
"Emily," he half mumbled and half groaned which piqued Lily's interest.
"Things not well?" Lily raised her eyebrows.
"I mean this in the best way possible, but she may be the dumbest Ravenclaw I've ever met. I can't hold a conversation with her and all she wants to do is snog-"
"Lovely," Lily choked a little bit. James looked at her a little funny and took a drink.
"What about you and Neil? He likes you," James observed.
"Yeah I'm not really feeling it with him," Lily put her hands in her lap.
"Yeah I've noticed the pattern," James snorted and Lily stared at him hard while he took another drink.
"What does that mean?" Lily asked.
"Someone likes you and you never like them back. At least in that way. First it was Snape, then me, now Neil," James said simply as if it was the weather.
"Yeah well I did like one of them," Lily shot back quickly which she instantly regretted.
