Lily laid on the bench with her eyes closed. She listened to the shower water running and James humming on the other side of the room. The water shut off and Lily heard James walking around.
"Okay you can open your eyes," James said. Lily opened her eyes and James was shaking water out of his hair. Lily did her best not to stare as James was shirtless but he caught her and smiled a little. "Yeah pining after a girl for six years let's you develop some hobbies, besides pranking," James patted his softly defined abs. He looked muscular but not overly so that he had washboard abs. There was still a gentle squish to him. Lily nodded and James pulled on a shirt. "It's party time," he said in a sing-song voice.
"And then detention time," Lily responded in the same tone.
"At least it's alone time," James had a crooked smile and took Lily's hand.
He pulled her out of the changing rooms and back to the cold. He began running up the hill and pulling her. Lily laughed as they stumbled into the main hall, out of breath.
They got to the portrait hole and James got pulled in as soon as it swung open. He joined the rest of the team that was chugging butterbeer and laughing together with other Gryffindors. Lily smiled watching them before going over to the marauders and Marlene.
"It only happened yesterday," Lily responded to their stares and sat down on the floor.
"And?" Marlene asked with wide eyes.
"What?" Lily asked.
"Tell us everything," Sirius mocked Marlene who rolled her eyes.
"I don't know it just happened and we weren't going to tell anyone until we were comfortable but," Lily trailed off smiling and hugged her knees.
"Are you happy?" Marlene asked and Lily nodded.
"Very much so," she looked over at James who waved at her. She thought about how different things had been just a couple of months ago when he would wave at her.
A little while later James tore himself away from the crowd and sat down next to Lily. Remus, Sirius, Marlene, and Peter were playing exploding snap.
"Here," James handed Lily a butterbeer. He wrapped his arm around Lily's shoulders and Lily sighed.
"I'd like to stay like this, but we need to start heading to Mcgonagall's office," she looked at James and he nodded. Sirius cleared his throat.
"Prongs, you're free tomorrow night. Right?" He asked a little pointedly.
"I dunno," James shrugged as he stood up and wiped some dust off of his pants.
"Sorry, I wasn't clear," Sirius stood up he walked over to the window. He dramatically looked back at James. "I said, Prongs, you're free tomorrow night. Right?"
"Tomorrows a full moon," Lily said as casually as possible and glanced at Remus and then to James.
"Okay how does she know?" Sirius sat back down pouting.
"Know what?" Marlene looked at everyone.
"Nothing," Remus said. "I'm quite tired I'll head to bed. And Sirius, I'm allowed to have other friends to tell."
James and Lily left the common room before an argument could start.
"Did Remus really tell you?" James glanced over at her.
"No. I asked him like 4th year. I mean I don't know what you and Sirius do but obviously you guys do something after that conversation," Lily shrugged as if saying no big deal. "If you want to tell me..." she trailed off and looked at James.
"Trust me, you don't want to know," James said a little darkly.
"What, is it illegal?" Lily joked and saw James's expression didn't change. "Oh my god it's illegal?" She asked alarmed and he shushed her.
Before Lily could ask again, they had arrived in McGonagal's office.
"Lovely," she opened the door before either of them could knock. "Follow me," she said and lead them to the transfiguration classroom. James and Lily walked in silence behind her.
"Easy night tonight," she said cheerfully and Lily exchanged glances with James. "Inside these boxes are buttons. Write out descriptions of them along with the name taped to them. The more detailed the better."
"Minnie, this seems like useless work," James said exasperated.
"I'm sorry. Shall I send you down to clean the bedpans with Madame Pomfrey?" Professor McGonagal asked sternly.
"Not that Poppy wouldn't love to see me," James grinned and leaned on the desk, "I would love to describe thousands of buttons for you."
"No magic," Professor McGonagal started to leave the room. "I'll be watching," she looked back.
"Love you, Minnie!" James yelled. Lily saw McGonagal shook her head. The door slammed shut behind her, and though the students couldn't hear, McGonagal had smiled and said to herself: James Potter will be the death of me.
"Okay well," Lily sat down with the bucket of buttons. "Would you say this is more Navy or Indigo?"
"I'm going to kill myself here," James whispered and Lily smiled.
"Go do bedpans then," she started writing down the button description.
"I would, but you'd miss me too much," James grinned cockily and kissed her cheek. "Also, that is obviously a Midnight Blue."
"I'm going to kill you too," Lily shook her head and furiously crossed out where she wrote Indigo.
"I dare you," James leaned across the paper and Lily looked at him, hiding a smile.
"We will be here all night if you don't even try and help," she tickled his nose with her quill.
"It's not my fault I can't focus," James said dramatically and laid across the table. "I just won Quiddich because I'm a god, this is boring, and I'm with a beautiful girl."
"Wow, and I thought your ego had mellowed," Lily broke out in a smile she had been holding back.
"You love it. And you suck at describing buttons. That is sky blue not baby blue. Are you color blind?" James looked over at Lily's paper.
"Shut up and help me," Lily laughed and threw a button at him. James dodged and threw a different one at her.
"Focusing in here?" Professor McGonagal popped her head in.
"Always for you, Minnie," James grinned over at her and she popped out.
"Merlin," Lily laughed. "Just focus."
"Anything for you," James winked. "Unless... the bedpans? Just kidding." James wrote a total of two buttons and then threw his head back. "This is it. This is death."
"I'm going to die here because of you complaining!" Lily exclaimed while laughing and James sighed.
"Fine. That's scarlet, not crimson."
"Merlin."
