On the following Friday, a list went around for students to sign if they were staying at Hogwarts for the holidays. Lily, not wanting to see her sister or her sisters new boyfriend, signed up with Marlene.
"Potter's staying?" Marlene looked at Lily who shrugged.
"Peter, Sirius, and Remus are staying too. We only get a couple more Christmas's all together," Lily reminded Marlene.
"Ladies," Sirius had appeared behind them and Lily jumped. "The boys and I are headed to the library if you'd care to join us."
"Why?" Lily narrowed her eyes. "When do you ever do your homework on a Friday afternoon?"
"I'll go," Marlene smiled and followed Sirius out the portrait hole. Before it closed, Lily noticed that James wasn't with them. Curiosity got the better of her and when no one was paying attention, Lily walked up the stairs to the boys dormitory. She found the door that said sixth years and knocked twice.
"Bloody hell," she heard James's irritated voice and the bed springs creak. "I said already that I don't want-" James stopped when he opened the door and he saw it was Lily and not Sirius.
"Evans," James said surprised. "Come in," he opened the door. Lily walked in and could tell right away who's bed was whose. Sirius's bed was unmade with clothes all over the place. Remus's was tidy with a couple pictures of the dresser. Peter also had a couple photos up but his way of organizing looked chaotic. James's was made messily with some clothes spilling out of his trunk. He had a silverish cloak on his dresser and the map was peeking out.
"What are you doing in here?" Lily asked after looking around for a minute.
"Just... thinking," James hesitated and Lily sat down on the end of his bed.
"About?"
"When you're ever going to give me my sweater back?" James grinned cockily and put his hand in his pocket. His tie hung loosely around his neck and his shirt had become untucked. "The better question is what are you doing here?" James asked and Lily sighed.
"I don't know, James. I just don't know. And I have the answer to everything," she flopped backwards. "I mean seriously, not trying to be know it all-y, but I know everything like all the time. Almost every class I get near perfect marks. I know who to trust. I know what I want to do after next year. I just know what I want, you know," Lily turned on her side and leaned on her elbow. James sat on Remus's bed while listening to her. "But then something changes and I don't do well with change even if I want the thing."
"And this thing is?" James asked. Lily didn't respond. James nodded and moved to his knees next to the bed so their faces were level. "Well, I say if you want the thing then you should go for it... even if you're scared," James tilted his head a little and Lily looked into his eyes. There was a beam of light from a window that was hitting James so his hazel eyes sparkled.
"Can you lay with me?" Lily asked softly and James nodded. She moved over and James laid down next to her and took his glasses off. He wrapped his arms around Lily and she put her head in his chest. She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply before moving up closer to James's head. Their noses were millimeters away from each other.
"I know I said I wouldn't ask again," James's voice came out in a hoarse whisper. "But please, for the love of Merlin, would you please go out with me?"
"James Potter, are you begging?" Lily smiled.
"If it means you'll say yes," the corners of James's mouth started to raise.
"Yes, but not because of the begging," Lily whispered and James smiled.
"I'm going to kiss you now," James whispered and Lily nodded. James brought his lips down to Lily's swiftly. James pulled Lily closer and placed his hand on her lower back. The kiss had more passion than the three broomsticks, but it was just as gentle. Slowly they pulled away and James smiled which made Lily laugh a little. James squeezed her tight and rolled onto his back so Lily could lay on his chest. He played with her hair absentmindedly and Lily smiled to herself.
"Can I call you my girlfriend?" James asked after a minute.
"Yeah," Lily said a little confused when he laughed to himself. "What?"
"Lily Evans is my girlfriend. It's just weird to say. My girlfriend is in my bed," James sounded almost giddy. "Sorry-" he added hastily when Lily looked at him and then he smiled again, "-girlfriend."
"I'm leaving now," Lily laughed and tried at get up but James pulled her back down. "Can we not tell anyone right away though? I want it to just be us for a little."
"Yeah," James agreed and stroked Lily's hair. Just as they had started to relax again, the door handle turned.
