Lily finally stood up after fidgeting for what felt like hours, but was only about ten minutes. Marlene didn't look up from the homework she had put off until last minute, as usual.
"I think I'm going to take a walk," Lily put her books back into her bag and hung it on Marlene's chair so Marlene could take them up to the dormitory.
"M'kay have fun," Marlene mumbled while writing slowly. Lily couldn't quite put her finger on it but she felt like she had to be down by the lake right at this moment. She pulled on her sweater on and walked out of the common room. Lily made it down to the lake with no trouble. She took her shoes off and sat down on the dewy grass, putting her feet in the water.
She sighed happily and closed her eyes. She felt so much better. Maybe she just needed to clear her head and relax. Things were too stressful in her life. It felt like her life revolved around boys, whether it was James, Remus, or Sirius. She hadn't gotten super close to Peter since he was so quiet all the time which meant she couldn't count him in her boy troubles.
Lily opened her eyes and looked up at the clouds that were passing over the unusually bright moon. The full moon. Lily had almost forgotten that was why the common room was so quiet that night. The boys had left to go wherever they go on full moons. Maybe that was why she felt unsettled. The boys usually made the night all about them and that didn't happen this night. There's was no interrupting her thoughts. While she pretended to hate it, she actually loved it.
She ignored the noises that came from the forest a couple yards away. Lily dipped her hands into lake and let the coolness wash over her. It cleansed her spirit and she couldn't help but letting out a loud sigh as she closed her eyes again. The air hit her cold, wet hands like a thousand knives, but Lily loved the feeling. Lily was so content in the moment that she didn't notice those noises from the forest were getting louder. Lily stood up to walk more into the lake.
She walked in so half of her calves were covered in the cold lake water. She dog her toes into the muddy earth and folded her arms. Hogwarts could be the most perfect, peaceful place on earth... until it wasn't. This time, Lily wasn't able to ignore the sound of snapping twigs behind her. She looked behind her but didn't see anything. Lily reached for her wand but remembered she left it in her dorm. She usually always had it with her and tried to ignore the slow rise of panic.
"Hello?" She squinted her eyes and looked towards the forest. She thought she saw a bush twitch but ignored it. When nothing happened, she slowly walked out of the water. Maybe I should head back to the castle, Lily splashed some water on her face before turning around again. She went to go grab her shoes but froze. Only ten feet away from her stood a werewolf on his hind legs. It towered over her by an easy four feet. She didn't dare make eye contact. She stayed halfway bent over, with her arm out towards her shoes. Lily swore she could hear it breathing. Before it could even move towards her, Lily noticed a gigantic deer charging towards her.
That was it. She had no control over her body anymore and fell to the ground, fainted. She had accepted death at that point.
James stopped just short of Lily and turned to face Remus, who was still standing there. There was a mishap where Sirius went to leave and Remus ran after him. They had been searching for upwards of an hour for him. Of course Evans would find him first, James thought bitterly to himself. He stood in front of Lily's body that had hit the group with a light thump. James pawed at the ground towards Werewolf Remus, while calling for Sirius. Just as Remus began to head towards James and Lily, Sirius lightly nipped at Remus's heels to get him away from James. Peter was waiting by the knot at the base of the whomping willow for Sirius and Remus who were barreling towards it at full speed.
James waited until they were safely out of sight before changing back into his human form. He dropped to his knees and looked Lily over quickly for any sign of injury.
"It wasn't a competition to find him, Evans," James smiled and picked her up with no difficulty. Her head rested on his shoulder as he carried her bridal style. James took one last look at the whomping willow before heading into the castle with Lily. James was halfway to Gryffindor tower when he heard footsteps coming towards him. He looked down the corridor and saw Minnie doing patrols. She stopped and looked at the two of them from the end of the hall. She nodded curtly before walking the other way. James grinned and shook his head before continuing.
It wasn't hard to get up to the tower after that. The common room was empty, but James was exhausted. He didn't want to go up more stairs to get Lily to her bed. He placed Lily on the couch and wrapped her in blankets and gently stuffed a pillow under her head. James wasn't sure if she was still passed out or just sleeping at this point.
"We need to stop meeting like this," James joked you himself, referring to the last time she fell asleep and he took her to her bed.
Almost as if she could hear James's words, Lily sat straight up. James had moved away from her but watched curiously as she looked at her hands and then quickly around the room. She didn't see James in the shadows and slowly laid back down, rolling over. James waited a minute to make sure she was gently snoring again before walking over.
"And they say I do crazy things," James moved some hair off of Lily's face. He smiled before leaving the common room to go back to where he was needed most.
