"Someone likes you and you never like them back. At least in that way. First it was Snape, then me, now Neil," James said simply as if it was the weather.
"Yeah well I did like one of them," Lily shot back quickly which she instantly regretted.
"You liked Neil? What changed?" James asked curiously and Lily shook her head.
"I really don't want to talk about this," she took another drink and when she looked back, James was looking at her lips. Her heart rate picked up and James lifted his hand. He brushed his thumb over her top lip which had foam over it. He wiped it on a napkin while Lily turned bright red. She shivered as the door opened and a couple of witches walked in.
"Here," James shrugged off his sweater and put the hole through Lily's head. James then laughed as Lily put it all the way on.
"What?" Lily laughed a little and pulled her long, wavy hair out of the sweater.
"It just looks so big on you," James smiled a goofy grin which made Lily smile. Somehow they had both gotten closer and their legs were touching.
"It, erm," Lily looked down at her lap and played with her hands. "It wasn't Neil that I liked. And..." Lily looked up at James, "And it wasn't Snape," she said quietly and scrunched her nose. James didn't say anything. "You know what. Forget I said that-" Lily turned away shaking her head. "It's getting kind of late maybe we should-"
Lily stopped talking as she felt James's hand on her cheek. She turned to look at him. James brought his forehead to hers and Lily closed her eyes. She could feel his warm breath on her lips and once again could smell the lemongrass and pine, now with a hint of butterbeer.
"I've waited to do this since I first saw you," James whispered in a voice that sounded lower than normal. His hand had moved into Lily's hair. Gently, James pressed his lips to hers. Lily let her hands go up to James's hair. The world around the both of them melted away. James pulled away eventually and Lily moved her arms away.
"We should, erm, head back they'll be getting worried," Lily cleared her throat and quickly finished her butterbeer and stood up.
"Oh yeah," James agreed and stood up, grinning.
"Stop smiling," Lily hit his arm lightly as the moved outside towards honeydukes.
"I'm not smiling," James shoved his hands in his pockets, still grinning.
"We should not have done that you have a girlfriend and-" Lily started.
"It's just a one time thing?" James asked and raised his eyebrows and Lily didn't respond.
"Screw you, Potter," Lily mumbled and James laughed.
"Déjà vu all over again. Let's see that's the millionth time you've said it-" James then leaned down to her ear, "-yet you still kissed me back."
Lily rolled her eyes and could feel James still grinning behind her. As they got back to the witch, James checked the map to make sure no one was around. By the time the pair returned to the common room, it was deserted and the fire was almost out.
"Goodnight, James," Lily said as they got to the stairwells.
"Evans," James grinned and kissed Lily's cheek which made her all flustered. "And you can keep the sweater, it's cute on you," James winked.
"Don't-"
"Tell anyone talk about it whatever I know just a tonight thing," James leaned off the stair and looked at her. "But it doesn't have to be," he said quietly before disappearing up the stairs. When Lily got to the dormitory, she stripped off her jeans and took off the shirt she was wearing. She put back on James's sweatshirt and some pants before passing out cold in her bed.
James on the other hand woke up the rest of the marauders and filled them in.
"Was it how you imagined it?" Sirius asked, no longer tired. "'Oh Lily-'" he was cut off as Remus threw a pillow at him.
"It was amazing. I can't even describe it she's just so amazing," James shook his head. "I mean she can't mean what she said about it not happening again... can she?" James look at the other boys. Remus hesitated before responding.
"Well you know Lily, she can be headstrong about things and doesn't like to admit when she's wrong about something," Remus spoke slowly and James sighed. "Just take it slow and don't rush her. Make her make the next move and you'll see."
"I spent literally all summer trying to forget about Evans."
"Lot of good that did you," Sirius laughed and this time James threw a pillow at him.
"Merlin, that witch will be the death of me," James hit the lights and laid down, signaling he was done talking about it.
