When Lily woke up the next morning, she had to take a couple moments to register that she was back in her bed. She remembered the Petunia letter, and then talking with James. Kissing him? No that can't be right. Lily rubbed her eyes and sat up. Her hair was frizzy and tangled with knots.
"Well good morning sleepy head," Marlene grinned and sat on the edge of Lily's bed.
"Hi," Lily rubbed her eyes a second time and reached over for her hairbrush.
"Did I imagine James Potter carrying you to bed?" Marlene grinned. Lily neglected to answer as she found clothes for the day. After pulling on her jeans halfway, she looked at her best friend.
"He kissed me."
"WHAT?!" Marlene yelled. Lily smacked her arm. "What?" She whisper-yelled as Lily got dressed for the day.
"He kissed me. I don't think it meant anything. We were just reminiscing," Lily hesitated before pulling her head through the sweater hole.
"Just ask him," Marlene shrugged and stood up from Lily's bed. Lily was going to argue with Marlene but thought better of it. They had had the same fight about her and James constantly. They left the portrait hole to go to breakfast before the Quidditch match.
"Evans!" Lily turned around on the stairs to see none other than James Potter running towards her.
"Meet you in the Great Hall?" Marlene asked and Lily nodded. Marlene continued walking while Lily waited for James to catch up.
"Can we talk?" James rubbed the back of his neck. Lily nodded and they walked to an abandoned corridor.
"Thanks got last night. I, uh, definitely wasn't feeling great," Lily put her hands behind her back and looked at her feet.
"Yeah. About the, um," James cleared his throat and lowered his voice, "the kiss. I'm really sorry about it. I shouldn't have and I-"
"I know. It didn't mean anything," Lily shook her head. She knew in her heart it was nothing, but it was painful to hear it.
"Okay," James nodded.
"Okay," Lily agreed.
"Great," James spoke more aggressively
"Great," Lily matched his tone and folded her arms.
"Perfect," James moved closer to Lily.
"Per-fect," their faces were inches from each other. "Good luck today, Potter," Lily narrowed her eyes and walked away from him. "Don't forget we have patrols together tonight," Lily called back without turning around and met Marlene in the Great Hall.
Gryffindor won the game against Hufflepuff easily. Lily wasn't feeling in the festivities so she decided to go upstairs and take a nap. She set her alarm for eleven pm and passed out. When she woke up, the party was still going strong. Lily sighed and changed back into her sweater and jeans to patrol. When she got downstairs, people were shouting 'shot shot shot'.
"Come on, Potter," Lily yawned as she passed James. He groaned but followed her. "Will the party survive your absence for an hour?" Lily rolled her eyes as they made their way to the top floor. Neither of them talked to the other as the walked through the halls. The went from the top of the floor to the bottom in silence. Lily sat down against wall when they reached the bottom.
"20 minutes," James sat next to her and Lily nodded. Neither of them wanted to walk around for twenty minutes. They sat in more silence for about three minutes which felt more like three hours. "Want to play chess?" James finally sighed, looking at Lily.
"Where-?" She was starting to ask but stopped when she noticed the bag slung over his shoulder. "Why on earth do you just carry a chess set with you?"
"Never know when you'll need a quick distraction," James dug to the bottom and pulled out pieces. There was no way his bag could hold all of that and be so light. Lily didn't question it and faced him. The board laid in between them and Lily put her hair up. "You know things are serious if Evans puts her hair up," James grinned. Lily shook her head with a small smile and watched James's first move. The first match, Lily won in under ten moves.
"Wow, for carrying that around, you really do suck," Lily shook her head and James rolled his eyes.
"You're so funny," he mumbled and set the pieces up. He was getting frustrated with how easily it came to her. "Why are you so good at this?" He finally burst out and Lily laughed. She had just checked his king.
"Always the tone of surprise," she joked before checking her watch. "We can go back. I don't want to keep you from your fans any longer," Lily stood up and yawned. "Plus, I have a cozy blanket that is just calling my name," Lily hugged herself as James put everything back in his bag and bounced up. Once again, the two walked in silence up to the common room. Lily wondered what James was so lost in thought about as he almost missed a turn. Once the portrait hole was opened, James was pulled back into the party. Lily couldn't understand how it was still going on. Lily was ready to make a beeline for her room, but Marlene grabbed her arm.
"Hey, how were patrols?" Marlene pulled Lily into the small group that included the marauders, Alice, and Marlene. Lily stood next to Marlene and shrugged.
"Fine. Not many others out so it was a slow night," Lily stifled a yawn.
"You really don't want to stay for any of the party?" Marlene pouted.
"Marlene, it's nearly one am. I'm exhausted," Lily rubbed her temples, but sat down, defeated. Lily zoned out the conversation and looked around the common room. She noticed that Sirius had made his way over to James and they were taking shots of firewhiskey together. Lily shook her head a little and tried to engage in the conversation between Remus and Peter but couldn't find a way.
"Come on, let's go take a shot," Marlene pulled Lily up who groaned loudly. She brought Lily over to where James and Sirius were. Marlene handed Lily a shot, excitedly. Lily, reluctantly, took the shot and put the glass down. While Sirius and Marlene were trying to egg her on to taking another one, Lily noticed something move towards them out of the corner of her eye. Katie had gone up to James and slid her arms around his waist. Lily knew she should look away, but it was too late. She knew James was to drunk at this point to care what he was doing as she watched the two of them start making out. Lily couldn't help the face of disgust that crawled its way onto her face. Sirius and Marlene followed her gaze, but before they could say anything, Lily cut in.
"Right. That's my cue to go to bed, have fun," Lily turned on the spot and walked upstairs. She ignored Sirius and Marlene calling her and let the dormitory door slam shut behind her.
